Catholics to get their own channel on Chorus

Thursday, December 29th, 2005

I have always been of the opinion that the selection of channels on Chorus have been inferior to cable providers in other parts of the country. The only time this was not the case was in the mid 1990s when Dublin’s Cablelink was unable to carry any satelite TV channels because it did not want to pay for them. Eventually it negotiated a deal which resulted in them being able to carry channels such as Sky One, Sky News and MTV etc.

MTV has only recently become availible in the City, and is only availible on Digital, where it has been availible in other parts of the country since the early 1990s.

Now the latest move by Chorus takes the cake. The Limerick Leader reports today that Chorus are to carry Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) as part of their package later this year.

This is not just any Christian channel, it is specifically Catholic TV.

Chorus’ resources could be used for more inclusive entertainment than this. One has to wonder which channel will be ditched to provide this muck, The leader does not say.

Clohessey’s Bar

Two members of the Travelling community won their case of Discrimination yesterday against Clohessey’s Bar on Bishop’s Quay after they were told that their “type” were not welcome, reports the Limerick Chronicle.

Bridget and Nora Casey brought a case against the bar and restaurant before the Equality Tribunal, when they were told to leave the premises on 22nd of January 2002.

In their evidence the women stated that they were regulars in the restaurant, and claimed that they were identified to staff as travellers by two members of the Gardai. It was also reported complaints were lodged with the superior officers of Gardai as a result.

It was claimed that in a meeting the following day with Brian Smith, co-owner of the bar, Bridget Casey was refused a reason as to why they were not served. and told her “your type are not welcome here.”

Denying the claim of discrimination, the management of Clohessey’s claimed that the reason the Caseys were refused entry was due to an incident that was alleged to have happened, during the previous October at the door of the Sin Bin nightclub, also a part of Clohessey’s.

Manager, Donal O’Sullivan also claimed that the two women created a scene when they were told lunch was off on 22nd of January.

Equality Officer Martin Duffy ruled in favour of the Caseys, and awarded them €200 each. Management were also ordered to issue an invitation back to the bar, given a free meal and a drink.

The Limerick Blogger

Wednesday, December 21st, 2005

It is an idea I have been thinking about for a few weeks, since I started my first blog on blogger. To start a blog so as not to have too many topics contained in the one journal.

Squids Blog was meant to be about me changing careers, but there were other things which I wanted to comment about, such as the goings on in the city. whether it be from stuff I find on the web, or in the local rags which doesn’t normally make it to the web. The news outlets in Limerick, those being the Limerick Leader and Chronicle, The Limerick Post, and Live95fm, only put a select number of stories and now that the “Alive in Limerick” blog is no longer going, there is now something lacking on the web.

This will be different to the Alive in Limerick blog, as I will be looking for team members to get involved also.

If you want to get involved drom me an email or comment at the end of this post.

You may need to register with blogger.com in order to take part. If you have a blog, then it would be advantagious. also this would be completely voluntary.

Anyway. lets see if we can make this the best news source for Liemrick.
