Caseys and Kellys “bury hatchet”

A southill feud has ended, according to members of both the Kelly and Casey family.

Anthony Kelly, brother of former criminal and Limerick City Councillor Mikey Kelly, shook hands with Timmy Casey, a member of the notorious traveller family from the Clonlong Halting site in Southill, shook hands outside the Circuit Court today.

The feud had been running for the past three years and involved several attacks on both sides. One incident involved an on-air spat between Anthony Kelly and Margeret Casey when the former was discussing the death of his brother on a local radio station. During the broadcast, Anthony Kelly accused members of the Casey family of being responsible for 15 incidents of rape which occoured in the southill area.

To date no one has been convicted of these sex crimes.

Timmy Casey was before the Circuit court today in relation to an incident which occoured in 2004 when he threatened to kill Anthony Kelly while he was giving an interview to a TV3 news reporter about a seperate incident that occoured at his home on March 11th 2004.

The TV3 recording equipment picked up the words “”I’m going to murder you. I’ll kill you, your dead. I’ll bury you down on top of Michael,” being said by Casey.

Giving evidence in court, Anthony Kelly admitted that there was hassle between the two families, however he said that there hadn’t been any incidents between them in the past three months.

“I was given an undertaking before today that there would be no more trouble and I accept it. I don’t want anyone going to jail. My family and the community are living in peace now and I it wouldn’t help things if anyone went to jail,” Kelly told the court.

The court heard that Casey had 29 previous convictions and was the subject of two suspended sentences at the time of the offence. One of the offences was issued only three weeks before he made the threat to Anthony Kelly.

Taking Casey’s guilty plea, and what he described as Kelly’s “Christian attitude” to the incident, Judge Carol Moran handed down a 12 month suspended sentence.

The men are reported to have shaken hands after procedings outside the courthouse.

Hmm, so how long can all stay out of trouble this time.
