International fraudster and sex offender dupes both charity and Mayor

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

An international fraudster managed to trick Limerick’s first citizen into showering him with praise after he gave a dodgy cheque to Limerick Animal Welfare.

John Cronin, (34) from West Lothian in Scotland, managed to pawn off a cheque for £100,000 to LAW last Friday.

Later that night at a charity table quiz in aid of the charity, Mayor Dick Scully sang his praises to Cronin for such a generous donation.

However, staff at LAW figured out who he was not long after the cheque was sent to the bank to be processed.

Cronin assumed the identity of a successful barrister, who was terminally ill and wanted to give all his fortune to charities.

According to Scully, Cronin was “very plausable” he also said that when he found out who he was he immediately contacted Gardai.

A garda source is quoted as saying “A garda source said: “That cheque is about to bounce all the way from Limerick back to the UK. Officially the cheque has not gone through yet, but this is not the first time he has tried something like this and it will certainly bounce.â€?

Cronin has a long history. He was convicted in Scotland of a brutal sexual assault on a Conservative Party activist, known only as Judy X. He was sentenced to life in prison for this offence but the sentence was later commuted to 6 years.

Reacting to the sentence, Judy X lambasted the Scottish judicial system at a party conference.

Cronin has the auspicious title of being the first sex offender to have been tracked by satelite by police in the UK.

He has pulled scams in both England, Scotland and Ireland. One of his favorite personas is that of a priest. He even celebrated mass at oen stage!

Hoodies to become part of Saletians school uniform

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

A piece of attire commonly associated with scumbags has become an official part of the school uniform at the Saletians Girls Secondary School.

The hoodies were designed by transition year students, Sarah Jane Darcy and Stacey Hehir, both 15 years old, as part of a project to set up a company and sell a product. The Examiner reports that the hoodies are selling like hotcakes.

The school however prefers the term “fleece”though, however a press statement by the Limerick City Enterprise Board, who run the Limerick City which runs the schools project, described the garment as a hoodie in their press release.

Gina O’Gorman, Transition Year Co-ordinator at the Saletians said “The two girls designed the fleece with school crest and it can be worn over the blouse and jumper as an alternative to the school jacket with the approval of the school. It has the school crest on it.â€?

At present hoodies are banned from schools in the UK, and there are calls from various quarters to ban them from shopping centres and businesses as they are used to obscure individual’s faces when they are up to no good.

More claims of rendition flights in Shannon

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

Aengus O’Snodaigh TD, (Sinn Fein, pictured left) has handed in what he claims is more evidence that CIA rendition flights have passed through Shannon Airport. It is hoped that this new “book of evidence” will prompt a new investigation.

However Taoseach Bertie Ahern has claimed that previous investigations carried out by Gardai amounted to nothing, and that the two files which were sent to the DPP contained nothing but press clippings.

“The complaints related to a regurgitation of media reports of allegations that Shannon was being used, Mr Ahern said in a statement to members of Dail Eireann.

But Sinn Fein are not the only party critical of the Government’s handling of the rendition claims. Michael D. Higgins TD (Labour) citing the 24 page report which the Irish Government sent to the European Union investigation into rendition flights within Europe, he said that Irish investigations were only done “at a distance.”

According to Higgins, information provided with the previous claims was gathered from cleaners and other airport staff who serviced the planes.

He also pointed out that Gardai are perfectly within their rights to search an aircraft if they provide a warrant, and believe that a crime is taking place.

Business representative groups such as Limerick Chamber of Commerce, IBEC and the Liemrick City Business association believe that that the matter should be taken out of the hands of the politicians.

It is feared by the business organisations that the issue has become too political and they also expressed fears that signs of tensions over the matter would discourage foreign business from setting up here.

Gardai probed three rendition flights

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006

The Government has claimed that Gardai investigated three claims that CIA prisoners, destined for interrogation and possible torture have passed through Shannon.

Two of the claims were considered so serious, that files on them were sent to the Director of Public Porsecutions, however no actions were taken because it was deemed that there was insufficient evidence to make a case.

The details of the three investigations are contained in a 24 page report which was sent by the Department of Foreign Affairs to the Council of Europe committee investigating allegations of secret prisons and covert CIA flights in Europe.

Despite the three claims being made, no member of the Gardai has boarded a CIA flight.

Foreign prisoners can be detained in Ireland only if they are passing through the country, and only if they are either being extradited, or are being sentenced in another country.

In 2001, the Irish and US governments signed an agreement which allows the US to detain prisoners in Ireland only if they are passing through the country, and provided they have prior permission first. This is done on a case by case basis.

Bin lorry explodes in Ballyneety

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006

Pictured in today’s Limerick Chronicle, A refuse collection lorry belonging to Mr. Binman caught fire and then exploded while it was travelling from Liemrick City to the company’s treatment plant in Kilmallock.

The explosion happened near Balyneety at approximately 1630 hrs on Monday.

A local resident in the area said that he feared for his family’s safety when he saw the truck explode. According to the eyewitness, the whole street was filled with thick black smoke and the smell of burning rubbish was described as “awful”

Two units of the firebrigade, one from Limerick City, and one from Kilmallock, rushed to the scene and spent three hours putting out the blaze.

The truck was full of rubbish, and it is believed that the fire started in the rubbish hold. A spokesperson from Mr. Binman said that an investigation would be carried out to find out what caused the fire. “We think there may have been something in the rubbish in the truck which started it, like hot ashes, but that is just speculation at this very early stage.” he said
