Fired.tk in the local press

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

Limerick Blogger contributors fired.tk have been busy, and have managed to get the attention of local press.

Two articles in the papers this week. The first was in the Limerick Chronicle (left, click to enlarge) and the second was in the Limerick Independent.

Well done lads. The Limerick Independent article was too big for the scanner so I have transcribed it below.

ALL FIRED UP

by Ciaran Ryan

THROUGH word of mouth alone, two Limerick teenagers have generated something of a cult following for their online radio show.

John Buckley, who presents the www.fired.tk Audio Entertainment Show along with Shane Geary believes that they have in the region of one hundred regular listeners to their programme.

This weekend, the duo will broadcast the final of four shows in their second season. Both presenters are still in secondary school and the idea for the radio show came about as an extension of work they were doing on a website. With minimal equipment and resources, the programmes are put together and recorded in the spare bedroom of John’s house in Raheen.

Two Irish internet radio stations stream the programme. Buckley explains how this came about: “We contacted Ice Radio and they said that they would be interested in playing the show, but Smack fm just fell into place. After hearing Aaron Carey’s sketch on The Blast with Ray Foley on Today FM, I chased after him to feature on the show, which he was very happy to do. It just happened he was involved with Smack fm also.”

John sees the half hour show as essentially a comedy programme, with sketches and quirky information integral to it. It is clear that the show is very much targeted at a teenage audience with some of it vearing towards toilet humour that could potentially offend older listeners. Each programme so far has featured guests, of which there were many highlights for the presenters. “Kevin “The Bull” Keogh from Des Bishop’s Joy In The Hood was hilarious. But Karl Spain threw guest passes our way to one of his gigs in the city, so all guests are equally great.”

The pair are delighted with the response to the programme so far, and John has plans to do some more radio work when he undertakes work experience with Regional Hospital Radio in the coming weeks. He thinks that basic media skills should become a more important part of the school sylabus to help develop the likes of Shane and himself. “What is really needed is for ICT to become an exam subject. Upgrading it would mean that there would be more standardised learning, plus the subject would be taken more seriously.” he added.

The final Audio Entertainment Show goes out live this Friday night through www.fired.tk

mind where you park! Motoring news

Wednesday, March 29th, 2006

Along with a whole new number of road traffic offences being eligible for penalty points from the first of April it now appears that some of the on the spot fines are going to increase. A standard parking fine is increasing from 19 to 40 euro. Parking in a disabled spot goes up even more to 80 euros. Fines not paid within 28 days will automatically increase by 50%. So be careful where you park and if you get stung by the wasps pay the fine on time!! At least there isn’t clamping yet in Limerick, unless you park down by Steamboat Quay where there is private clamping. And come to think of it, the centre out near the regional hospital where Supermacs is also has clamping as people have had the habit of parking their cars there and going over to the hospital to visit their friends and family. No news yet of the council meeting about the proposed bus route on the Ennis Road which has caused a big stir with the residents and hard done by motorists.

Meanwhile, still traffic related, the National Roads Authority has announced that the Direct Route consortium is the preferred tenderer for the proposed Limerick tunnel PPP scheme. Contracts are due to be signed by the summer. The DirectRoute Consortium comprises the companies Lagan, Roadbridge, John Sisk and Strabag. Construction of the 900 metre tunnel is expected to take about four years and it will be tolled. The expected cost is about 400 million euros, which in Ireland will probably mean that by the time its finished it will be well over a billion!!

Kelly fights for disability allowance

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

The Evening Echo reports today that Anthony Kelly, former gangster and brother of deceased city councillor Mikey Kelly, is fighting the Department of Social Welfare for a €165 a week disability allowance he claims he is entitled to.

Despite spending almost €100,000 on foreign holidays, cars and a security system for his family’s home according to the Echo, Kelly, seen here calling a truce with long term rival Tommy Casey a couple of weeks ago, still believes he is entitled to the allowance because he “suffers from a disability which he sustained after he was injured in a number of shooting incidents”.

Lotto Plus 2 winner in Raheen

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

A quickpick ticket bought in Ryans Centra in Raheen won the €200,000 jackpot in Saturday night’s Lotto Plus 2 draw. Suffice to say it wasn’t me, does anybody know who it was?

If you got Chorus, DO adjust your set!

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

Chorus analogue viewers in Limerick and Shannon will have to ‘adjust their sets’ soon as part of a channel reshuffle. BBC2 and Eurosport are moving frequencies and will need retuning. Channel 6 has also been added, with a promo loop at the moment and going live on Thursday at 8pm.

For those of you technically minded, the new frequencies are:

Eurosport: 311.25
BBC2: 271.25
Channel 6: 391.25

Chorus are writing to all analogue customers to inform them of the changes. UK Gold has disappeared though, and this isn’t mentioned by them in the mailout. I’m not sure if it was ever an official part of the package anyway.
