Munster V Biarritz Countdown – 20 Days to go
Sunday, April 30th, 2006It seems that Welsh residents are hoping to cash in on the lack of hotel accomodation in Cardiff on May 20th. According to the Wales on Sunday newspaper, many residents have placed advertisements for rooms on the site www.gumtree.com in the hopes that they can make a few bob out of fans travelling over for the match.

Limerick City councillor Ger Fahey is calling for an investigation into over 20 bonfires in the city. He claims that people are using bonfires as an excuse to dispose illegally of large items like matresses, and three piece suits. He also claimed that dangerous substances were being disposed of in bonfires.
sports updates
Saturday, April 29th, 2006Limerick suffered their first home defeat of the season at Hogan park last night as they lost 3 -2 to Dundalk. Having gone behind after a quarter of an hour the home side drew level some three minutes later but two further second half goals put the game beyond Limerick. The home side pulled one back but couldn’t gain an equaliser. Limerick are still top of the league by a point but second place Shamrock Rovers have a game in hand.
Munster meanwhile were back in Celtic League action and had a good win over Borders last night. The visitors came out on top by a scoreline of 41-25. Christian Cullen scored a try in his comeback. Hooker Denis Fogarty also crossed the try line as did David Wallace and Ian Dowling.
Mum fears for missing son
Saturday, April 29th, 2006
The mother of missing Southill teenager Richard “Happy” Kelly has expressed her fears following his dissappearance.
Earlier reports from the LimerickLeader suggested that he disappeared on Monday, however the Irish Independent claims that it was actually Sunday when he went missing.
Mum Mary, is quoted in the paper as saying that she is now fearing the worst as the search for Richard goes into its sixth day.
She said: “It is totally out of character for him. No matter where he goes or what he does, he would always ring me.
“His mobile is turned off since he has gone missing and nobody has any idea what happened him.
“He took nothing with him when he went out on Sunday; everything is still at home,” she said.
Searches of the N7 as far as Daly’s Cross, as well as house-to-house enquiries are underway.
Anyone with information can contact Roxboro Gardai, Contact information and a discription of what Richard was wearing when last seen can be found here.
Bishop Murray taking a little rest
Saturday, April 29th, 2006The embattled bishop of Limerick, Donal Murray, is finding it all a little too much of late.
The cleric has decided to take a little rest after the stress caused by the recent series of events which lead to the suicide of Peter McCloskey.
Aparantly, the ordeal took alot out of him and has decided to take a break. Reports on local radio earlier stated that he was due to take a break later in the year, but he decided under doctors orders to move his holiday forward.
Munster V Biarritz Countdown – 21 days to go
Saturday, April 29th, 2006It seems that the students of UL have a little problem.
Aparantly the college has a policy of holding summer exams on a Saturday, and this year some students have exams on the same day as the match.
A petition is going around the college asking the authorities there to move the exams from May 20th to another day. It seems fair seeing as the Munster team have many connections with UL.
and some other stuff I picked up today:
Munster received three injuries in their Celtic league match with Borders
From the Examiner:
Reserve prop Frank Roche is in trouble with a calf muscle injury, John Hayes, who came on for him early in the game, picked up a knee injury, and Jerry Flannery pulled a leg muscle in the dying seconds. That’s not what Kidney wants from a front row that will have to be in prime condition for the Heineken Cup final clash with Biarritz on May 20.

Limerick to Shannon rail link one step closer
Saturday, April 29th, 2006According to the Irish Times, a railway link between Limerick City and Shannon Airport is one step closer after Irish Rail appointed MVA Consultants to carry out a study into the plan.
The study is expected to cost €240,000 and should be completed before the end of the year.
The Shannon Rail Partnership has already spent €200,000 on preparitory work, and a line has been preserved in the Southeast Clare Economic Plan in preparation for the construction of the line.
The full article:
The campaign for a €60 million rail link to Shannon from the Limerick to Ennis line received a boost yesterday when Iarnród Éireann appointed consultants to examine its feasibility.
MVA Consultants have been appointed to conduct the €240,000 study and it is expected to be completed late this year.
The Shannon Rail Partnership, which includes Clare County Council and Shannon Development, has already spent €200,000 on preparatory work on the proposed link, while a line has been preserved in the Southeast Clare Economic Plan to allow for its construction.
The proposed 10km link will form a spur off the Ennis-Limerick line which has enjoyed massive growth since Iarnród Éireann restored the line to mainline standard. Last year passenger numbers went up by some 24 per cent from 45,000 to 56,000.
Shannon Rail Partnership chairman Cllr Seán Hillery (FF) said yesterday: “Today’s announcement is great news, and we are very confident that the result of the study will be positive and place Shannon airport as the fulcrum of economic development between Galway and Limerick.”
He said a technical sub-group of the partnership has worked closely with Iarnród Éireann over recent months to finalise terms of reference for the study.
Mr Hillery said the costs of purchasing land to allow the project proceed would be lower than usual as half the lands were already in public ownership through Shannon Development, Clare County Council and the Shannon Airport Authority.
Limerick East deputy Jan O’Sullivan (Labour) said yesterday: “It is essential that Shannon is able to compete with Dublin and Cork. Therefore proper infrastructural access by road and rail is crucial in attracting both incoming tourists and Irish people travelling abroad. Many who currently see Dublin as their most convenient airport may choose Shannon if they can access an efficient rail link to Limerick or the west of Ireland.
“Like any other international airport it is imperative that there is an efficient public transport system in operation, linking the nearby industrial estate, the largest in the State outside Dublin, and also Limerick City.”
