Implement Fitzgerald recommendations on Gardai: Quinlivan

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

It sounds like things are going from bad to worse in parts of the city this last week. between arson attacks and gunshots being fired , it is pretty understandable that people are starting to get frustrated at the Government’s creation of “regeneration boards” before they have rooted the scumbags out of these housing estates.

For one person living in the immediate vicinity of all this, it is felt that things are not getting any better, and is asking for the deployment of the 100 extra Gardai for Limerick City as recommended by the Fitzgerald Report.

In a statement, the former Sinn FĂ©in election candidate, Maurice Quinlivan said; “This past week has seen numerous arson and shooting incidents throughout the City. These attacks have the potential to cause multiple injury or worse and many innocent people are terrified of getting caught up in the seemingly endless ongoing violence. I would appeal yet again to all those involved to draw back and desist from such attacks. This type and level of crime has unfortunately been allowed to develop over a long period of time in parts of Limerick. People in parts of our City are living in real fear and it is now long past time for the Government to put a stop to what is happening in these communities before there is more deaths or serious injuriesâ€?

As well as asking for the fast-tracking of the 100 extra Gardai for Limerick, he is asking members of the public who may have any information on recent incidents to contact Gardai.

Ways to follow Limerick V Tipperary

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

At home

You can watch the game on RTE One from 1530 hrs

From work

You can watch it on RTE.ie. While this may be only availible to people on the island of Ireland)

Outside of Ireland, only have the option of listening to it on on line streams from http://www.live95fm.ie

There will be a RTE radio one stream, however, if you do not wish to install that awful RealPlayer on your machine, then stick to the 95FM stream as it uses windows media player.

If anyone knows anywhere internationally people can watch the game on TV, be it a pub or on satelite, let us know.

Moderators

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

I have appointed four moderators for comments

If they want to make themselves known to the public, they can if they wish.

I personally would like to thank those that stepped forward and offered to keep an eye on our comments. Legally we are liable for what random members of the public say, so protection of comments is probably the most important part of keeping the site on the net.

The other admins might want to add additional moderators, but the ones I have appointed are to meet the sites immediate needs.

Rest assured, the people I have appointed are fellow bloggers from Limerick, or have proven themselves since the blog’s creation to be honourable individuals, so comments will be treated fairly.

Limerick 37 scrape a draw at the death!

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

Well, its a good sign of a team that they keep on pushing to the very end and so it proved with Limerick 37 at Jackman park tonight. Having gone a goal up on four minutes after an excellent free kick from Rossi Cosgrave, the super blues failed to push on and wound up going in at the break trailing by two goals to one after a lead goal by Kilkenny right on half time. The home team had played the better football for the first half hour and had two great chances to stretch their lead but didn’t capatilise on their early dominance.
The vast majority of the crowd of 534 people were getting restless as the second half wore on as it seemed as the home team had ran out of ideas but as the clock went into the fourth minute of stoppage time, the super blues won a corner. Rossi Cosgrave and Kevin Waters combined to take it quickly and with the Kilkenny defence sufferering a lack of concentration, Waters crossed the ball into the six yard box where substitute Paul Danagher headed the ball to the net. From the kick off the full time whistle was blown and the home team had somehow salvaged a point! (perhaps like this blog coming back from the death!!)

So you want to keep the site going, do you?

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

I have said in previous posts that this site has become too big for me, and that It is controlling me rather than me controlling it.

After discussion with other admins it is fair to say that keeping the site open, but with some changes would be a better idea than closing it. Fuck, there is 6 months of hosting left in our contract, we can make a decision to renew it or not then if we do not like how things are going.

Here is what I propose to be the changes to be made to the site.

Here is what we need to do. Firstly i would like to appoint some more blog editors. These people would have the power to moderate comments, If you are of good character and have a genuine interest in helping out in this manner, please drop us an e-mail. Our address is limerickblogger@gmail.com

I have removed all the category tags as they were listed in a way that was very sloppy. I will be rebuilding this category tagging system in a few days once we have chosen blog editors. The blog editors will be given the task, when they have spare time, to go through the archives, find any posts or comments that would get us in hock, and fix them. They would also be required to assign category tags to each of the stories.

We will also be adding a disclaimer to the site, it will read as follows:

“While we make every effort to ensure that our stories are correct, We cannot guarantee it, and if you find that something is not right, we would appreciate it if you informed us by e-mail. Our address is limerickblogger@gmail.com.”

On the matter of white supremisists and their threats. To be quite honest, after thinking long and hard about it, if they really wanted to post my picture on the internet they could. I have posted it a couple of times myself already, albeit two or three years ago. Some of the things which will remain the same include the treatment of hate mongers.

So the MSI has hired a solicitor, let the “reds” speculate.” The reds don’t need to speculate, when your before the courts, your name and the name of your solicitor apre usually posted on the courts.ie website when you go before the circuit court, and are posted in the courthouse itself when in the District court. If you do find yourselves being convicted of a crime, your name and address will appear in the media. With littering act, Limerick City Council has a policy of publishing an annual list of convicted litterers. This contains the names and addresses of those who have been fined in the courts. The Reds don’t need to speculate, they can simply wait.

The other Admins have also promised to put in more imput. The likes of the coverage of the Limerick V Tipperary match which was posted on this site should not be allowed to go wasted.

I will not cow down to racism. It will not put me out of business. While it was one of many things that made me make my initial decision, it alone will not shut this site down.

So lets have a look at the reasons I initially decided to shut the site down.

Legal problems – Any potential legal problems will be addressed by the appointment of extra moderators. A slight change in format is in order also, giving local news, but in a more opinionated rather than just reaming off the facts. Fair comment is not libel and the last time I checked, we lived in a democracy.

The site taking up too much of my time – Again the appointment of more moderators will fix this.

Threats from white supremacists – In the past, I have simply posted the IP addresses of those who have threatened me personally. I have now learned a way to actually ban an IP from our site, or even redirect it to another website. when stormfront’s “limerickpit types limerickblogger.org into his browser, he is redirected to adl.org for example.

That is pretty much it really. Once the editors are appointed we can open the comments again. If the editors stick around, they might even become writers. I would like to see this site as a sort of indymedia for limerick, but without the political bias.

This is the end

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

It has been a fun 18 months or so, well 19 months. but after much thought and contemplation, I have, finally, decided to wind up the site.

I can no longer run the site, as I do not have the time to keep up with all the comments that come in, and cannot in good concience be 100 percent certain that a post from God knows when will come back to bite me on the arse like the Wilmot one. Mr. Wilmot s complaint was the first I became aware of the errors in the post, and I am not in the business of deliberately wroning people.

Also, with improvements in mainstream media and their web presence, now updating daily, there is little need for the site anymore.

We will fulfill our obligations to advertisers, meaning the page will stay up until July 14 at 2359 hrs.

The eddie Rockets competition will close on July 3 at 2359, and will post the winner’s details and arrange for them to receive their prize.

However, there will be no more comments, and no more posts. I will leave comments here open for those that might have any questions.

We may be back in another guise in the future, I just haven’t decided yet.

For now. bye.

EditThere have been many requests to keep the site running. I too would like to see the site stay, but it has become bigger than me, it is controlling me when I should have been controlling it.

If this site is to go on, it will have to change. I am open to any ideas and advice on keeping the site going.

Selling it would be to me like letting a daughter marry. I would not like to sell it and come back in six months full of popups and garbage.

Another alternative is to make it into a PLC (private limited company) but I have zero knowledge about how to do that.

Edit With a mountain of luck, and some restructuring of how the site is run, there is an incy wincy possibility that we might be able to bring the site back.

For now we need you to wish us luck.

Apology: John Wilmot

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

On January 21, 2006, we published a post which gave an account of a case involving a Mr. Jahn Wilmot, from Rathkeale, County Limerick. This post had an inaccuracy in it.

In the article we stated that Mr. Wilmot was convicted of Dangerous Driving, which was wrong, he had infact been found guilty to a lesser charge of careless driving.

We have since corrected this error and have extended a personal apology to Mr Wilmot, and we reiterate regret on our part for any distress the post may have caused to Mr. Wilmot or his family

NoteAs a precautionary measure, all comments are in moderation mode, and will remain so for a while. possibly a couple of weeks.

As always the site can be contacted at limerickblogger@gmail.com
