Limerick Pride Festival

Monday, July 30th, 2007

For the first time ever the city is throwing a fabulous party to celebrate all that is gay in Limerick. The festival will coincide with World Pride Week and is actually a pretty large affair!
The lineup includes Gay Cinema, Gay Arts (Music, Theatrical & Visual Art), and even a Pride Parade along O’Connell Street. The festival is a citywide event in venues across the city – The Belltable, Bar 3, Dolans, Perys Hotel and on the streets.
As well as all that the organisers have pulled together some hell of a party, daily breakfasts, garden party, bbq, disco, “pride party” and even a spot of Bingo. There will also be street entertainment after the parade and have organised a free historic tour of Limerick for anyone interested.

For those who dont really understand the point behind such a festival, it is for all gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual people but not exclusively. These events are generally open to every one in the city, to come out and show support for the community.
Pride Parade
The lineup is more impressive then what City Hall can mustar for St. Patrick (which is slightly worrying), but this is a first for the city and a sign of how diverse the city has become. Pride Parades go through most cities in the western world (including Dublin, and i think Galway) and from my experience abroad is a much talked about and very popular celebration for the entire city.

Holocaust “myth” group probed: Independent

Monday, July 30th, 2007

From the Irish Independent:

Holocaust ‘myth’ group probed

A FILE is to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions over a far right political party which calls itself Movement to Save Ireland.

Garda spokesperson Superintendent Kevin Donohue confirmed that officers had made an arrest and seized computers from the group last month. The group’s leader had claimed on Newstalk’s ‘The Breakfast Show’ that the Holocaust was a “myth”.

For anyone who is interested, holocaust denial is not a crime in Ireland. One can deny the holocaust happened if they so choose to do so. The act in which the Movement to Save Ireland is being investigated under is the Prohibition of Incitement to Hatred Act, 1989,

While there is nothing more than what occurred in the NewsTalk segment contained in the Independent article, claims on far-right wing websites that certain people are being charged with holocaust denial can now be put to rest, as they are false.

O’Shaughnessy stars,as Limerick reach the All-Ireland Semi-Final

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

Limerick 1-23 Clare 1-16

It was Limerick’s Andrew O’Shaughnessy who stole the show in this match with Clare today in Croke Park contributing a personal scoreline of 11 pts,Shocks as the supporters call him was in irresistible form as he led Limerick to the All-Ireland semi-finals. He silenced many of his doubters today indeed ,he also got a good supply of the ball which helped his cause.Limerick will be very happy with their seven-point win over their great Munster rivals and Neighbours Clare at Croke Park today.
Bragging rights tomorrow in the work places will be Limerick’s this time,It atones somewhat for their trouncing by Clare last year.Their was a lot of frustation evident within the Clare support judging by some of the comments as they vented their anger towards their players,Clare played well but were lacking ,showing signs of inexperience in certain quarters. Diarmuid McMahon missed a sitter in front of the Limerick goal early on ,it could have made a difference..
It was of 0-11 to 0-7 at half time for Limerick looking more comfortable with their defence well on top, commanding clearances from Brian Geary.People were saying during the break ,would Clare turn up for the Second Half as they felt the match was slipping away from them .It got worse for Clare as Limerick ran up a lead of 1-14 to 0-11 .Clare stage a mini revival and came within 3 pts of Limerick, there were anxious faces in the Limerick support.Points from Andrew O Shaughnessy and James O Brien relieved any of this and in the end Limerick ran out easy winners.Limerick can now look forward to the Semi-Final .
Sunday, August 12th
Guinness All Ireland Hurling Championship Semi-FinalLimerick v Cork/Waterford 4pm (Croke Park)

For Clare ,That great old warrior Colin Lynch gave it his all for Clare today, the loss of more experienced players like Lynch could be a major blow to Tony Considines rebuilding plans for the future.
A comment I would make from been there was ,there was never that intensity of battle in the Limerick Clare match or nowhere did the atmosphere match those games with Tipp and the final with Waterford. It was quiet I felt with the support without been offensive. The vast expanses of Croke Park may contribute to that.I have to commend Croke Park ,it’s facility is so accessible as I had my son in a wheelchair with me today for the first time. It’s a world class facility.

Limerick girls win Gold, Silver and bronze in UK

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

OK we mentioned the Doyle sisters before, the 15-year old swimmers who were taking part in European swimming contests in Europe recently.

Well, they have gone and done us all proud again by winning a bag full of medals in the UK on the first day of Youth Swimming Championships at Sheffield, England.

As I am rubbish at commenting on sports, I will leave the full detail to RTE.

Newstalk neglected to ask racist some glaring questions

Saturday, July 28th, 2007

Newstalk carried a feature on their breakfast show yesterday which has appeared online, featuring the leader of the self proclaimed “Movement to Save Ireland.

The group, lead by a Mr. Brian Wallace, (his name is in the public domain now so we can use it) was interviewed by one of the station’s reporters who failed to ask some important questions.

The reporter in question, claimed that Mr. Wallace was media savvy and avoided using strong racist terms, however, he failed to seek clarification on Mr. Wallace’s frequent use of the term “Monkey-culturalism, as appears in several of his posts on stormfront, and on one of his older websites.

Minister Mcdowell was on Irish television recently saying that he is going to bring creatures like OJ Chimp-son into the Irish police.I oppose monkeyculturalism. We need a nationalist party in Ireland.I would happily set one up if I had the bare minimium of resources.I am struggling to start a bookshop. Justin Barrett if he was less timid is in a position to start a party now. All he has to do is to organise public meetings and cut the crap.

He also failed to ask him about his Italian ethnic background.

He failed to ask him about the invasion of people’s privacy by posting their photographs on his own website and submitting them to the Combat 18 linked Redwatch.

He also failed to ask him about the posting of personal information of people on Stormfront.

He did mention however, that people who have disagreed with this “Movement to Save Ireland” have received abusive and threatening messages from it’s supporters.

One more piece of information which came from the piece is that a file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions in relations to a raid on Mr. Wallace’s residence in Mid June, so it’s not all bad.

To sum up, NewsTalk were soft on this guy.

Just an addendum, This site has been going like the clappers with news stories all week, busier than usual in fact, and the only excuse a Newstalk journalist can make the treacherous journey hike across the M50 is to see some gobshite from Cork spewing his hate.

This person has been living like an itinerant of hate for the last five or more years, travelling from city to city with the hand out for “resources” for his white supremacist quest. Why is it that it isn’t until he shows up in Limerick, the city which more or less told the NSRUS to go and shite, do Newstalk suddenly take an interest in him?
