Demolition in Delmage welcomed

Saturday, July 28th, 2007

Bungalows in Delmage Park in Moyross are introduced to Mr. Wrecking ball – All Pictures: Maurice Quinlivan

The demolition work in Delmage Park goes on with eight bungalows being introduced to the wrecking ball on Thursday.

The demolition of these houses are being welcomed by Sinn Féin activist and former election candidate Maurice Quinlivan.

Today’s [Thursday] demolition of 8 Bungalows in Delmege Park is very welcome. I have had serious concerns for some time about the bungalows in Delmege Park, concerns which I have expressed to the council on a number of occasions and I am very pleased that they were demolished and removed [Thursday] and would like to commend the council for this action.”

As is almost always the case, properties which have been left fall into disrepair have become a magnet for scumbag activity, or as Mr. Quinlivan more politely puts it, “Anti-social behaviour.

The presence of what he described as “eyesores” and their attraction of undesireables was making live near impossible for local residents.

Following up from his post on LAW, Sean has uploaded the following TG4 video (in Irish)

The Examiner ,Would you queue all night for fashion?

Saturday, July 28th, 2007

Is it a world gone mad? Hong Kong, New York, LIMERICK …Is this the correct way to create environmental awareness ?to quell the use of plastic bags or is it just another fashion accessory?. There were several people in the Queue in Limerick this morning, who were getting ready to flog them on E-Bay?? For a tidy profit.
Comments such as this morning “ It allows the ordinary person to be able to get a sought after fashion accessory ,normally it’s for the exclusive of the rich , “we live in a miserable country look at the weather we have ,this cheers us up “ .

I’m not a Plastic Bag, 1000 Queue outside Brown Thomas

Saturday, July 28th, 2007

Brown Thomas had the people queuing outside their doors since 6 am this morning, numbers of up to 500 or more people ,many were left disappointed, for the season’s most sought after item,Anya Hindmarch’s I’m not a Plastic Bag, only 200 were available to Limerick. They went on sale this morning at 9 am for 12 euros.
Is this consumerism gone mad? This bag is designed to send out a strong message about our use of plastic bags ,they now cost 25 cents each , a recent increase from 15 cents. The hope is that everyone would use a recyclable bag instead.

stalemate at Jackman Park

Saturday, July 28th, 2007

A crowd of just over 600 saw Limerick 37 and Kildare county play out a scoreless draw at Jackman park last night. It was not a very exciting game with little flowing football. The home side had the best of the chances and won a penalty in the 77th minute after handball in the penalty area. Unfortunately Kevin Waters sport kick was well saved by the Kildare goalie, Austin O’Neill…. see clip below

Indeed, the home side finished the game on a lucky note as Kildare had an injury time goal ruled out due to a foul on home goalie Davie Ryan. The blues are back in action next tuesday night away to the Wexford youths and then are back at home next friday night to Finn Harps which promises to be a big game as Harps are the form team at the minute and are in fourth place in the league one behind the super blues. Table toppers Dundalk were beaten 1-0 by Shelbourne so the blues have gained a point on the Louth men!

Rapist refused leave to appeal case.

Friday, July 27th, 2007

A Nigerian born rapist has had his application to appeal his conviction to the supreme court rejected by the court of criminal appeal.

Emmanuel Ashibougwu, (26) with an address of The Square, Annacotty, County Limerick, was seeking to appeal his case to the supreme court, claiming, that the racial prejudice of the jury, denied him a fair trial.

Ashibougwu was convicted of raping the 20 year old girl in Limerick City in December 2004 after he dragged her into a nearby car park. He had claimed in court that sex with the girl was consensual.

The appeals court rejected the application as there was no claim of problems relating to race during the initial trial.

Ashibougwu is also serving a concurrent seven year sentence for possession of €300,000 worth of heroin which he tried to sell to undercover Gardai in the city centre.

It was in the drugs posession case where race was taken into account and not the rape case. Judge carol Moran suspended the final 12 months in the seven year sentence for possession of heroin on the grounds that being black, he would find it difficult in an Irish Prison.

boxing, soccer and rugger bits..

Friday, July 27th, 2007

Andy Lee will make his Irish professional boxing debut on the undercard to the Bernard Dunne v Martinez European title fight on Saturday the 25th of August at the point depot in Dublin. Tickets are on sale now at Empire Music on O’Connell Street and from ticketmaster, priced from 75 to 250 euros, not as dear as Barbara Streisand tickets but hopefully a bit more interesting!!

On to soccer now and the super blues are back in action at Jackman park tonight at 7.45pm where the opposition are Kildare town. tickets on the gate for a tenner, definetely cheaper than Barbara Streisand and if last weeks 4-1 victory is repeated definetely a better way to spend a night!! After the heartbreaking result versus Cobh ramblers two weeks ago, the blues got back on track at home last week and will hope to close the gap on the top two who are also in action over the weekend. Shelbourne entertain Dundalk who have had a wobble or two of late and Cobh Ramblers entertain Finn Harps who are the form team in the league at the minute. See table below.

Apparently some stories have been doing the rounds that manager Paul “Ski” McGee was being lined up for the vacant Athlone job, but Ski has put this fears to rest as he stated “I have a 2 year contract with Limerick 37 and I am more than happy with the progress we have made so far, I have worked hard to build a solid squad and will continue to improve things as we move on. It is disappointing that some people can find nothing better to do other than cause mischief instead of getting behind the clubâ€?. Good news for the club.

On to rugger news and after the launch of the adidas jerseys during the week, the next news up is that the pool fixtures for the Heineken cup are to be announced on Monday.

The Magners league fixtures are already out and Munster have been handed a tough start to League with their first four games against the four Welsh sides.
Their opener is on the weekend of September 21st against Llanelli Scarlets in Musgrave Park followed by a trip to Newport before entertaining Cardiff Blues (Musgrave Park) on the weekend of October 5th. Then they’re off to Wales this time to face the title holders Ospreys at the Liberty Stadium (Weekend 12th October).
