Shannon-Minsk route to end in October

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Belerussian airline, Belavia, have announced that it is to scrap it’s Shannon to Minsk route from the end of October.

The airline cited poor performance and increasing operations costs as the reason for deciding to scrap the route.

The airline will decide on whether to scrap the route during the summer season in January.

The Shannon-Minsk route carries approximately 7,000 passengers, and is frequently used by the charity Chernobyl Childrens Fund, which brings children to Ireland to recover from exposure to radiation which remains after the world’s biggest civilian nuclear explosion, which happened in the 1980s.

Belfast-Heathrow a flop?

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

This deserved it’s own post, if only to present the opportunity to point and laugh.

Out of over 8,000 seats offered in special promotions by Aer Lingus to launch it’s Belfast to Heathrow route, at massive and mindboggling 34 have sold in the three weeks their offers have been running.

The last eight days of Shannon-Heathrow has, in ocntrast sold 757 seats.

More in the Examiner

If an alternative carrier can be found for Shannon-Heathrow, those in the mid west will be able to tell Dermot Mannion to stick his planes where the sun don’t shine when the reality of how fierce competition on the Belfast London route actually is.

The Shannon-Heathrow controversy 29.08.07

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

The Shannon-Heathrow stuff for Wednesday goes here.

First up, our petition watch, The online Petition set up by Ray Toumey now has 12,860 signatures. If you have friends or family that haven’t signed it yet, please ask them to do so.

Just an edit to bring this to your attention. From the Clare People Newspaper’s Youtube channel

Claims in the Limerick Chronicle today that British Midland (BMI) are at an advanced stage in negotiations with the Shannon Airport Authority to provide a Shannon-Heathrow service are being downplayed both by BMI and Shannon.

Shannon’s Airport Authority have said that they are in talks with several airlines including BMI with a view to acquire a Shannon-Heathrow service.

In an interview on the INN news service, CEO of British Airways, Willie Walshe, has also indicated that he would be open to the possibility of running the route.

Aer Lingus today held it’s first board meeting to tecide on what to do about Michael O’Leary’s request to hold an Extraordinary meeting which, if held, would put a proposal to reverse the Shannon-Heathrow decision to a vote, as well as the moving of some of Aer Lingus’ Gatwick routes from Dublin, to Belfast. A decision was not reached at this meeting, however, it is likely that whether or not they will hold an EGM will be decided by the end of the week.

From Ocean FM (Sligo)

North West Independent MEP Marian Harkin is calling on the Government to guarantee that Aer Lingus will not cease it’s Shannon to Heathrow service until an alternative has been provided.

Her comments come as a delegation from the Shannon Connectivity Alliance is going to Brussels today for key talks with EU officials concerning the future of Shannon airport

Tainiste Brian Cowen addresses the Shannon-Heathrow controversy while speaking at the Humbert School in Mayo.

If you wish to be bored by the details, click here. but to cut a long story short he said

1) Buying up Heathrow slots by the government was not an option as they would not come up for lease for some time.

2) Willie O’Dea was just reflecting the views of the local people he represents, however the Transport Minister Noel Dempsey was giving the government position on the matter.

3) He denied claims that the Taoiseach was behind negative publicity being churned out by Independent newspapers about the Shannon-Heathrow controversy.

Anyway, the Cabinet is due to hold it’s first meeting after the summer holidays today, which should prove to be interesting.

Sit in protest at Limerick Prison

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

One, Two, Three Four,
We Won’t take it anymore,
Five, Six Seven, Eight
Give us back our drugs…. and stuff

While those in the rest of the city are protesting because not enough is being done to keep drugs out of their area, those on one little corner of Mulgrave Street are protesting because there isn’t enough drugs in their area.

Prisoners at Limerick Prison staged a sit in protest today in the Excersise yar over the success at which authorities are having rooting out drugs from the prison.

They are also protesting the severity of punnishments being handed down by the prison in relation to drugs.

The poor babies, you would think they were being given 20 lashes for every tenspot found in their cells, not that it wouldn’t hurt mind you.

The Irish Examiner newspaper reports that visitor numbers are down by 30 percent since Rocky, the drug busting sniffer dog started working at Limerick Prison.

The paper has also claimed that the four legged friend of decorum in Limerick Prison goes into hiding during his off duty hours due to the fact that several violent criminals want to “do him in”

Rocky found seven stashes of drugs on Tuesday.

The Shannon-Heathrow controversy 29.08.07

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

The events for Tuesday relating to the Shannon-Heathrow controversy.

First up, our online petition watch, if you haven’t signed it yet, please do so. At present there are 12,756 signatures.

Now, have a look at this from the Independent, (Ah ffs, here he goes again at the independent)

Transport Minister Noel Dempsey arrives back at his desk following his holidays tomorrow with his ‘in’ tray full of Aer Lingus and Shannon files.

Ahead of the first Cabinet meeting after the Summer break on Wednesday, the Minister will meet with his officials to discuss the so-called Shannon crisis.

Notice how the paper uses the term “so-called” in an effort to downgrade the seriousness of this crisis for Shannon. Stick around, I’m going to put the boot in to the Herald in my next post.

Back in Limerick, a motion put to Limerick City Council to boycott Aer Lingus has been withdrawn after what is described as a heated meeting at City Hall.

Councillor Diarmiuid Scully (Fine Gael) withdrew the motion after a majority of councillors indicated that they would not be supporting it.

Councillor John Cronin (Fianna Fail) described the motion as a publicity stunt by councillor Scully, however he later withdrew this remark.

From RTE News:

Councillor Scully agreed to withdraw his motion but said he would table the motion again if he was not happy with the government’s response after the next cabinet meeting.

A compromise motion, calling on Aer Lingus to reverse its decision to cancel the Heathrow service and if necessary that the Government should use its 25% shareholding to ensure the continuation of the service, was agreed.

Some of the things the councillors had to say, from the Examiner

Slots at Heathrow are worth €30 million. The government are handing these four slots to another country. The people in the North do not see themselves as part of the Republic

Michael Hourigan – Fine Gael

We have come here to protest at the loss of Aer Lingus flights and jobs at Shannon and now want to cut more jobs with a boycott.

John Gilligan – Independent

It looks as though Fianna Fail is in real split hell. A group of Fianna Fail backbenchers, MEPs as well as members of the Atlantic Connectivity Alliance are visiting Brussels today in an effort to see if anything can be done in Europe to save the Shannon-Heathrow route.

Ooh Ooh, some geeky nerdy linking that can be done on the Clare people website. Let see how it works

Fianna Fáil revolt
The Clare People – Monday, 27 August 2007

The previously mentioned internal Fianna Fail memorandum on Shannon-Heathrow was “selectively distributed” according to a Clare County Councillor.

Peter Considine, a Fianna Fail councillor, told Limerick 95FM’s Limeric Today that none of the clare Fianna Fail members recfeived the e-mail and that they only received it from fellow members “up the country”
