Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

I hadn’t seen any pictures of Riverpoint with activity going on inside, usually, any time i passed it all the lights would have been off, so when I seen it today, i took this, not for any particular reason, just for the hell of it.

Here is another, for no particular reason

Movings and openings in the city

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

Some new stores opening in the next couple of weeks in the City Centre. Joining the new Diesel store on Bedford Row will be clothing outlet Jack and Jones from next Thursday.

A store opening on O’Connell street this week will not only sell clothes for both men and women, but pets as well. Imasa Lifestyle will be holding fashion shows at 1300 and 1500 hrs on Friday to celebrate their opening. According to tomorrow’s Limerick Post, there are “golden tickets” in circulation which will allow the customers who have them to benefit from a 20% discount.

It is the Limerick Post themselves who are on the move. The paper, which has been published in Limerick for the past 23 years, is moving from it’s Patrick Street offices to 97 Henry Street from January 8th.

Blogs get recognition in Leader website revamp

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

If ever there was a bee up my arse when I started here it would have been how local news websites were only updated every week.

Two years on and that has all changed.

For the past couple of weeks, the good folks at the Limerick Leader have been assembling and testing out a new website, which, in tomorrow’s paper will be announced to the world.

Gone too are the days of three story news days, now with the new site, more stories are availible for visitors to the site.

Message boards have also been added, but the part of the site which is of most interest to me is the directory of local bloggers which has been added.

The list is incomplete, so if you want to get your blog on the list, and if your from Limerick naturally, send a message to the email address at the bottom of the page.

Survey on regeneration of St. Mary’s Park – Results

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

Sinn Fein Limerick have released results of a survey of residents carried out in the St. Marys Park area in relation to plans for the regeneration of the area.

The survey consisted of four questions, and the answers revealed that 95 percent of those surveyed did not feel well enough informed about plans for the area, and only one third stated that they were in favour of the plan.

The results of the survey are below.

The number of houses which were surveyed, not surveyed, vacant, or refused to participate in the survey. A not surveyed house was where no one answered the door to the data collectors.

Question 1: Are you in favour of the redevelopment of St. Mary’s Park as proposed by Limerick City Council (370 replies)

Question 2: Are you receiving enough information on the proposed redevelopment of St. Mary’s Park? (377 replies)

Question 3: Who do you feel should be responsible for providing you with the information to enable you to make an informed choice? (369 replies)

Question 4: Following the regeneration, do you wish to stay or leave the St. Mary’s Park area (382 replies)

What is a scumbag

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

scum bag [Noun]
A person who is deemed to be despicable or contemptible

There have been a lot of accusations lately on here that using the word “scumbag” was being derogatory of those who were from disadvantaged areas. The only place I could find where the term was used to describe people from the less well off areas of our country was Wikipedia, and given the ease at which any oul’ gobshite can edit the pages of that site, I would not give it much credibility.

The term scumbag seems to come from the 1960s, and was used to refer to a used condom. After being used it was nothing more than a bag of man-goo. (sorry if you have just eaten)

Nowadays, it is used to describe a person who is undesirable, deserving of contempt, or is despicable.

My own opinion is that a scumbag is a person whose actions are deliberately designed to cause misfortune to others, whether it be for pleasure, or to make a profit. It doesn’t matter if it is a car thief in Moyross or a corrupt property developer in Dublin 4.

So, what makes a scumbag well, a scumbag? Or are you one of those people who believe that there are no such things as scumbags, who believe that a guy who steals a car belonging to his neighbour who needs it to drive to work in Adare the following morning is misunderstood?

Hopefully those of you who wish to discuss the exact definition of scumbag will confine it to this thread.

Setwrights Cross road victim is named

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

The man who was killed on the N18 dual carriageway at Setwright’s Cross near Cratloe has been named as Michael O’Donoghue, a grandfather from Hyde Road, Prospect in the city.

After getting off of a bus at 2000 hrs on Sunday, Mr. O’Donoghue was struck by a car as he attempted to cross the dual carriageway towards Setwright’s Pub.

His daughter was waiting for him in the car park of the pub.

The crew of a passing ambulance gave medical attention to Mr. O’Donoghue as traffic continued to pass by.

Gardai are now investigating the incident, and are trying to ascertain why Mr. O’Donoghue did not use the nearby footbridge which was just yards from where he attempted to cross the road.

Mr. O’Donoghue will be buried tomorrow at the old St. Lawrences cometary after his funeral mass, at 1030 hrs at the Dominicans Church.

Camogie team and Journalist honoured by County Council

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Limerick won their first ever All-Ireland senior Camogie Championships after beating Cork in the All-Ireland Senior B final last month, and their achievement was recognised by the County Council during a special presentation to the team.

“I congratulate Aoife Sheehan as captain, the team, panel, trainers, coaches, selectors and back room staff because I know that the winning of an All Ireland title is not done on the day of battle. The extensive training and many hours of planning that is required by the players and their mentors to win an All Ireland title begins months beforehand and often goes unrecognised” said Councillor Kevin Sheehan at a reception held at County Hall in Dooradoyle.

Also receiving an award for his achievements was journalist Arthur Quinlan.

Mr. Quinlan has worked as a journalist for fifty years, as both the Midwest correspondent of the Irish Times and as editor of the Limerick Weekly Echo, now a publication of the past.

He is noted for being the only western journalist to interview Che Guevara, and showing Cuban president Fidel Castro how to make an Irish Coffee.

He has also reported on numerous world leaders who would pass through Shannon Airport during his half century career.

Moyross citizen worth €171 to county council

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

It will cost Limerick City Council €171 for every Moyross citizen who it is hoped will be transferred from the juristiction of Limerick County Council to the City Council.

A price tag of €1.2m is being asked for by the county council for the hand over of Moyross and Cahirdavin..

It is hoped that the payments could be made over the next five years to compensate the County Council for the loss of revenue from rates.

From the Leader:

The area to be transferred is the Limerick North Rural Electoral Division and includes Caherdavin, those parts of Moyross currently in the county and extends to the Clare boundary taking in the townlands of Clondrinagh, Clonmacken, Coonagh East and Coonagh West, Knock, Shanabooly, Ballygrennan and Clonconane.

The County Council will now be hoping that those in the city will stop their whining about their request for an extension on the south environs of the city, including Dooradoyle, Castletroy and Raheen..

The changes for people living in the area would include:

Shared ownerships, and rents would be payable to the City Council after the transfer.

Court cases and moneys owed to the County Council on the date of transfer would still be handled by the County Council.

The Cahirdavin development plan will continue as normal.

The City Council would assume responsibility for the 14 bay halting site at Clondrinagh.
