The Murdered Mayors of Limerick

On March 7th 1921 former mayor of Limerick, Michael O’Callaghan was shot dead by unknown assassins A half hour later, the incumbent Mayor, George Clancy was shot dead in his bed. His wife, who made an effort to shield her husband was also injured by gunshot. After the attack, it took Mayor Clancy an hour to die from his injuries.

Today, both Clancy Strand and O’Callaghan Strand are named in their honour.

In 1921, the murder of the first citizen of Limerick was reported the world over. As is usually the case, while looking for one thing on the internet, another thing tends to present itself.

Here is how the news was reported in the New York Times.

I’d say I’d agree with you up to a point but my own consciense would prevent me from going to the RSF one, some right thugs associated with it in Limerick I’m afraid, who are certainly not traditional republicans as the party claims they are.

With regards to the GFA etc, the people don’t have the stomach for another war as things have changed for people so much in the 6 counties, it’s too easy for people sitting in the cosy south to say “never, keep the fight” when the people no longer know what the fight is about. People in Limerick are sick of gunmen ruining our cities reputation but yet this is only a drop in the ocean to what people in the north had to put up with.

I don’t like SF, I believe they are hypocritics to the extreme (In the north), they promote the police yet if you dob one of theirs in it they’ll still kill you, republicanism should be free from these double standards, SF’s leadership are dictators and while I respect individuals like Maurice immensely, I despise the Adams/McGuinnes show. If republicans want to respect of the masses, it can start earning it by putting pressure on the drugdealers and criminals in our cities to let us live in peace.

nice to see the 2 lord mayors remembered.good stuff.while the republican subject has been raised the annual sean sabhat commemoration is on sunday 6th january.at bedford row at 1.45 for march to the republican plot st.laurences graveyard.last year i attended the 50th republican sinn fein comm (rsf) and i have to say i was v proud to be in the presence of many people who were actually on the same job as sean sabhat and fergal o hanlon the night they were killed by the ruc.seen a lot of old(and new)faces.my conciounse prevents me from attending the provos comm any longer as i dont believe the stormont agreement will work.like all the other agreements in our long republican history.and been asked to support a renamed ruc called the psni disgusts me.cosmetic changes dont impress me im afraid.they are the eyes and ears of britains illegal occupation of our country.any way,on a lighter note have a happy new year everybody
