John, what was the name of your great grandfather the stone mason who worked on the the building of the library

    LimerickFattie,

I live on the yellow road and feel your pain.
  • Shannaboley
Did they not save any bollards from that park on patricks street where they took down the fences. They should have reclaimed bollards to use the new ones are out of place.

...and yet more flats being built overlooking the Park. How long before the new residents demand the removal of trees, and no doubt having built right up to the wall, what chance the wall and footpath bounding the meadow being relocated back 3m or so and yet another small portion of the park expires.

On a positive note the gate is already attracting much favourable comment, just hope the graffiti artists and the "woz'ere" morons stay away from it.

    Careys Road Resident,

I know they used to use the land as a depot but why not convert it to more park land and not see it for flats? The Park is now bounded on two sides by high rise flat buildings on Edward st and on Joseph St. I just think that the park should not be encroched upon by high buildings like that because I think it spoils it, I have also noticed lots of cigarette end under the balconies of these apartments in the Park. I feel this is an awful shame. I think that the apartment buildings were inapriopriate for the area given that they also very much tower over and inturde upon residents on both Joseph and Edward st.

what I love about the Carnegie Building are those miniature 'little green men' scaling the face of it! :)
  • Careys Road Resident
    Limerickfattie,

While i agree that both privacy and blocked sunlight are issues for the current residents on Edward Street i would also like to point out the 95% of the land which hold thos appartments was not previously available to the public.

That land was held by the council and used as a storage facility.

The photos are great but I think the gate is a bit plane. They played it too safe with the design when they really had a good opertunity to perhaps get the gate designed by a scluptor and given the City a new land mark. That gate could be one to any Park anywhere. It is an improvment on that corner but it could have been a lot more.

Just to refresh peoples memories. The Land the apartments that were built in the Park on Lord Edward street was sold to developers to finance this gate. If it was up to me I would prefer one less gate and all that Park land still available to City Citizens. Not only did they reduce the area of the Park but they also reduce Peoples privicy and enjoyment of the park by blocking out sun light.
  • For any interested parties i have posted a link below of a photograph taken from the same area as Photo 3 above. This was taken during the 50's.

The new entrance to the park is brilliant, the gates are nice too. Now visitors who arrive by bus or train across the road will see the new entrance as a welcoming site. Thank you,
    Johnny.

A big improvement but not as "grand" as I was expecting considering all the talk about it.

I HAVE TO SAY IT DOES LOOK FANTASTIC, THE GATES BLEND IN WITH THE RAILINGS.AND IT ALL COMES TOGETHER. 10 YEARS DOWN THE ROAD WHEN THE STONE WORK IS WEATHERED IT WILL BE AS IF IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE, PITY ABOUT THE TOILETS THAT WERE THERE ON MALLOW STREET WERE NOT REPLACED, WELL DONE.

I hope the graffiti stays away, my great grandfather was a stone mason on the the building that is now the Art Gallery, I'd hate to see it defaced by graffiti. Not that I am against graffiti but it has its place. The art and skill that those men had was amazing.

    The gates are fantastic looking.

Looks great. A huge improvement. Pity about the apartments though. How did they get planning permission?

Very negative bumbaclot, but it was the first thing that crossed my mind too, its a super job.
  • bumbaclot

  • Ian Moore
    That looks great.

    Nice photos Tippryan.
I take it the new Building dow by Bedford Row(& Marriott) is all finished now?
  • Julian D'Arcy
Looks fine. In keeping with the original design but I think it is an opportunity to attract attention to it visually by placing some kind of sculpture in front of the entrance.

Those bollards don't do much for me. I know they are a necessary evil but maybe they could have been made in the style of the time, perhaps ornate cast iron types.

Overall, it is a definite improvement on what was there, ie no gate! It should open up the park to more people. I know the park are on a repairing spree at the moment, so I can't wait to see the results.

The playground has been a huge hit but it is the only one in the city. The one in Clare St. was downsized. That should be looked at again as an alternative.

Oh, the public toilet outside Pery Park does not work. If you were a 5 year old kid dying to go and your Mum brings you to a toilet that does not work, how long could you keep it in!!!

That's a nice job on the gates
