Glorious victory for Castletroy in the Junior Cup final!
As if further proof was needed that Limerick really is the heart of Munster rugby, Castletroy College walked away today with the 2008 Junior Cup trophy. They defeated P.B.C. by 22 to 15.
Match report
The weather was marked improvement on the rain and storms we’ve had the last few days. The weather stayed clear for the whole match, but a strong breeze blew across and down the pitch for the whole game. The first half was a tough affair, but Castletroy seemed to have the edge. They maintained a lead through most of the half despite playing into the wind. Near the end, however, they conceded a score to leave PBC up 10-8 at halftime. During the second half PBC got another try, giving them a 15-8 lead. Things seemed to be looking up for the Cork school, but retribution came swiftly with as Castletroy steamrolled across the line. Castletroy flyhalf Andrew Fullen made the difficult conversion to level the scores. Tense minutes ensued, but Castletroy showed Pres just how much this team had improved since last year’s final – they netted a third try to give them a 7 point lead. As the game entered the dying minutes, Pres pushed for a score that just wasn’t there. Castletroy were made endure a few minutes of injury time with the ball swarming dangerously inside their 22 before the referee finally blew the whistle.
Overall verdict: Deal with it, Cork. Castletroy’s better than all of your schools. There, I said it.
