i dont think it is a plant that will be missed!!

i used to throughly enjoy my smoke breaks in dell!!

dell worker they have broken temp employees contracts for 1 day. if theres a bank holiday and its not busy they renew the contract for the tuesday. skyguy ur so right. it is a breeding ground for eejits. i worked there for 3 yrs and the amount of weirdos that have been there for years is a joke. think thats y i left i was afraid of turning into one of them.

There is an insurance policy that can cover you for redundancy my brother got it. You need to have it for 3 months before you claim and its a bit expencive it depends on how much you want to insure but if you have to claim its cheap. You can also claim the full dole as well. Not sure where he got it but he's happy he is better off financially and has all the time in the world.

What i mean is get another full time job somewhere with less hours or if you wanted to study the weekend shift is ideal work fri to sun and have the rest of the week for study,i worked in dell and they paid for 3 courses for me and when i worked night i was left off to attend college,i agree the temp's rights are not very good but i know people who have worked 3 years and got multiple contracts but they no the facts before they start,if you want to make fast money for a holiday/car etc its ideal place because there is lots of overtime,every day poople ring DELL looking for work so if a temp misses days or dont like doing the hours then they would not be called back,if you were running a buisness would you call them back if you knew other workers would do the hours? as far as i know they are not planning to move production of pc's/laptops from emf3,only scenario would be when poland gets more lines up and running and meet the demand for most of the european countrys sales then emf3 will slowly shift away.

to the point you seem to have a fair bit of knowledge about Dell, is it true that when Dell start to build the lcd's that Sercom built, that they will have to build them on the production lines and the computers that were being built on these production lines will no longer be built on these lines, so were will they build them. also why do they only bring back MOST of the Temps and not them all, do you think its fair that someone can be there for 3 years as a Temp ( if they are there 3 years they must be good workers) and then not be recalled beause if they do they will have to be made fulltime, you also state above that if they dont like the hours they should do a course and get a job somewere else, how can you do an evening course if you are working 12 hour swing shift, I work in Dell and Im a Temp do you thik if I refused to work 12 hour shifts that my contract would be renewed, I dont think so.

Why the union-bashing? What's wrong with workers defending their rights, negotiating on a collective basis? Certainly some are bloated and ineffective, but not all, by any means.

DELL always let temps go they take most back and most of the people know the story when they get employed in DELL about getting a contract or not.

Dell are letting 600 temps go this friday and are taking some back on Monday week and the week after that.

If there was a union in DELL limerick would be a bad place......FACT.

In build it's normally a day or a couple of days, other areas are covered by the builders until they get busy again. The other areas could get by for weeks without a full crew but with so many people coming and going builders could get left go a bit longer!

cant we find a balance somewhere, true unions might have collapsed dell yet it would be nice to see some protection for workers from the 'dell-nazis' that abound at the limerick plant. And abound they do.

Getting back on topic it is indeed ominous. Before Christmas there was a news story that Dell Limerick were looking for a government grant to transition from Manufacturing to more "skilled" jobs like Finance, IT and Customer service thus saving 1000 of the jobs in the plant. Now it looks like these are the areas being hit. Not a good sign. If they were planning to expand the workforce in these departments why are they letting experienced people go now.

Even more ominous is the fact that no mention has been made of layoffs in manufacturing. If it was going to be small they would have announced it now with the 250 other jobs.

Not only that. Its rubbish!! And agreed, if there was a union in Dell there would be no factory now.

dell dont let ppl go for 'a day' then call them back. if anything its a week or two. This breaks their tenure as it were so that Dell are not obliged to grant them Permanent status even if theyve actually worked in the plant for a few years and probably well deserve it. Naturally it keeps wage costs down between each 'quater'.

Skyguy, i have a degree and i work in Dell, me-thinks the house you grew up in was a breeding ground for 'egits' (idiots) a fertile one at that on evidence of yourself.

Mickey's Mickey joining a union solves nothing employment rights are open to everyone. Unions in this day and age are there to take money off you every month to line the unions bank accounts. They are not the powerhouse they once were and are quite lax at fighting your corner when things go wrong especially if there aren't a lot of members in your employment.
Unions are a very profitable business .

Micheal Dell dont put a gun to people's head and say work these hours,you have a choice to work these hours and if you think the hours are to long then go to college or find a job somwhere else its quite simple.

If there was a Union in Dell it would have been history years ago.

Dell are giving 6 weeks for every year thats as good as you'll get anywere, ok let me get this right 1 person in a union in a company that employees 4,500, some cloug that person will hold, anyway who said she wanted to join a union, Delll are actuallty a good company to work for, wages are good facilities are good, sure the hours are terrible but you cant have everything, what I said was Dell is a breeding ground for fu*kin ejits and its about time they got rid of the dead wood, how can a union help that.??

The redundancies wont hit the production floor for another 2 years atleast i'd say,if poland start shipping more then Dell will employee less temp staff leaving a core group,there will always be enough work until emfP gets up and running like emf3 and that won't happen anytime soon.

There is no law against joining a union and she can do it independently. In fact she could join the Independent Workers Union. It seems that Dell is going the way of Sercom anyway so why get some muscle in to negotiate for redundancy.

The point about this announcement is that the jobs that are going are in Admin,Sales etc and not assembly or whatever it's called. Don't know what the message there is but surely it's the assembly jobs they'd be moving to Poland if they were going to move any.

I agree. I am running vista on my windows Pcs and I am more than happy with it

XP would make a good wife and is good in the kitchen,always gets the kids ready for school and very reliable,but vista is trendy and always looks nice and always trys new ways to please her man.gimmie mrs vista anytime

Thanks for the info re Vista/XP, although they don't exactly publicise the availability of XP until you're actually at the purchase end. My comments re Vista are more the reflections of an associate who was not a bit impressed with the system after buying it. Apparently it needs a shed-load of power or memory by comparison with XP and has had teething problems. If they've fixed it in the meantime well and good. But from what I've heard I'll stick with XP as it's been fine for what I need.

Skyguy, from your post I can only guess Dell have huge administration problems. Perhaps the HSE could take a leaf regarding its decision makers!!

Now would be a good time for your sister to join a union then.

No they don't, they are always recruiting temps while they need them then let them go for maybe a day before they call them back, saving money for at least a day, that's how tight they have it.

Regarding redundancies Dell are losing out to HP, this doesn't mean it's not profitable, just not gaining as much market share as them (Though the last results say the tide is turning)

Dell want to steamline the company, not have people in each country doing the same job, don't be surprised if more departments are moved to India/China though to save on costs, Dell are talking about putting huge money into turning the company more lean and drive sales further, if anything it's good for the company and people in Limerick, except for the poor sods that are to be out of work.

Sky guy when was the last time your sister was sent home? ive never heard of anyone get sent home of a thursday in dell i think your facts are wrong,if you come in to any job and there is not enough work that day you cant be sent home and if you were to you would get paid once your shift starts.

its about time they done it, they are getting rid of all the dead wood, Dell is a breeding ground for fu*kin ejits, I mean who ever heard of a company bringing people in to do 12 hour shifts when there is not enough work for 12 hours, then they tell them to take thursday and fridays's off out of their holidays because there is nothing to do, they pay them time and a half and then send them home on flat time, my sister works there an its happening regulary...... if some of the people making these decisions get the door it will save Dell a fortune.....

You can also buy their systems with xp which is what most people are doing. Vista isn't in much demand

Not so fast on the whole Vista thing. Dell are the ones putting most pressure on Microsoft to keep XP as an option on their systems. They were the first to openly state that they'd keep shipping it on new systems, regardless of any Microsoft imposed cutoff date.

Regarding the layoffs, it's only a matter of time before all sales and support is done out of India and all the manufacturing is done in eastern Europe. That won't change as long as they're willing to work for < €100 per week and we're not. It's not fair but what are you going to do?

Whats wrong with win vista? i think its great,soon every pc maker will roll out vista and sales of XP are stopping soon worldwide.

Hoof: You can buy any Dell with XP,i got a laptop before xmas and it gave me the choice of change the OS to XP..

This will definitely not be the last announcement..

They havent built the largest Manufacturing plant in Europe, in Poland for nothing..

actually you can add a few hundred temp workers to the limerick tota lthere, theyre about to let them go too as contracts finish up and its gonna bera few weeks b4 tyhey start recruiting again.

Probably not the last such announcement either. Mind you, they've done themselves little favour tying themselves that Windows Vista OS. I'm holding off on buying any new PC from Dell until that disaster is sorted out.

Well at least it's not as bad as the one in Dublin but it still sounds ominous. Sign of things to come?
