Limerick men have convictions quashed

Two Limerick men, who along with three other men from Cork, were convicted of an illegal organisation in 2005, have had their convictions quashed at the Court of Criminal Appeal.

The CCA quashed the convictions of Ultan Larkin (37) Faranshone and Ciaran O’Dwyer (53) Castletroy View after the court heard that the men were not charged “forthwith” after being arrested. It was claimed in court that they were detained for twelve hours before being charged.

This meant that the Special Criminal Court was acting outside it’s juristiction in convicting them of membership of the group styling itself as the “Real IRA.”

There were cheers of joy from the public gallery when the CCA judges delivered their verdict.
