May 25th: Africa Day in Limerick

Around the world, people will be marking Africa Day with special events to celebrate the continent and it’s people.

In the run up to the day, and on the day itself, there will be a number of events taking place in Limerick to mark the occasion.

On the 16th May, Mary Immaculate College on the South Circular Road will have a guest lecturer for the occasion. Education and the developing world will be presented by UNESCO chair at Oxford University Colin Brock. The lecture takes place at 1630 hrs.

On 23 and 24 May, Limerick City Hall will host a number of events, including an art exhibition, and a chance to sample African foods. Other events include music presentations and a football tournament.

Human Rights: African legal and artistic perspectives is an exhibition and seminar also taking place at Limerick City hall between 19 and 24 May.

Also on the 19th May, Limerick’s Live 95FM will host a debate entitled, Embracing Diversity, One People, One Heritage. The discussion will cover Ireland’s contribution to African development and the impact of Africans in Ireland.

On the day itself, a free lunchtime concert, Rhythem Africa, wil take place at the Limerick Institute of Technology Millennium Concert Hall. This is a youth participation music project and is completely free. Contact the University Concert Hall for or Limerick Institute of Technology for more information.
