If you are planning on going, remember that O’Connell Street is an alcohol free zone. If you have booze it will be confliscated by the Gardai.

You’ve Got Mail!

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

A Fijian woman who had €120,000 worth of cannabis sent to her in the post has received a three year prison sentence at the Circuit Court.

Alanieta Leitabu (30) of the Gables, Ballysimon, pleaded guilty to possession of the drugs for sale or supply on June 25, 2007.

The court had previously heard how a package, addressed to a Gene Black, had been seized by customs offices as it arrived into the state from South Africa.

Leitabu signed the package under the “Gene Black” name when she received it from an undercover Garda.

“he package contained 12 bars of cannabis, which were each wrapped in birthday paper to give the impression they were a birthday present,” Gda David McGrath, of the divisional drugs unit told the court.

Michael Collins BL, Defending Leitabu, described her as a quiet shy person, and claimed that she was only facilitating someone else who was “more sinister.”

It was heard how a man was questioned but not prosecuted in relation to the drugs haul due to lack of evidence.

Judge Carol Moran sentenced the mother of two to three years stating that it would be unjust to give her the manditory ten year sentence set down in law.

There are now two newspaper articles in the window

CCTV image from Westbury stores

Two copies of an article relating to a proposal for a Garda sub-station in Westbury now grace the window of Westbury stores after one highlighting opposition to it from a Clare County Councillor was removed last week.

From the Limerick Leader

Proprietor, Tony Hayes identified Clare Councillor Cathal Crowe as the culprit when he viewed CCTV footage of his shop on Sunday night.

The article outlined proposals by Mr Hayes that offices adjacent to his shop would be suitable for a garda base in the estate. Cllr Crowe’s opposition to the proposal was highlighted in green marker and Mr Hayes believes this is the reason why the councillor wanted the paper removed from public view.

We won’t know if Councillor Crowe thinks it is acceptable to walk on to a business premises and remove items from display without the proprietors permission as he is making no comment.

More from the Leader can be found here.
