Girl (6) killed in Ballybunion traffic accident

A 6 year old girl, believed to be from Limerick City has been killed in the East End area of Ballybunion, county Kerry.

It is understood that the child was in the town for the weekend with her parents.

She was killed when she was struck by a car as she crossed the street with a group of other children at approximately 1200 hrs.

Her remains have been taken to Kerry General Hospital where a post-mortem is set to be carried out this evening.

Gardai at Listowel are seeking witnesses to the collision. They can be contacted on 068 50820

just want to say as the broken hearted relative of this child our lives are so messed up from that day .that we must take care of our loved ones cause you never know what each day brings. i miss her so much that my sometimes i feel my family will never get over this.

i agree with careys road resident about the speeding in that area not by locals but by passers by or people on holiday
about the sppeding but not that a child would survive an accident if hit by a car at 50kmh as i lost a child after being struck by a car that was travelling at 40 kmh it was where the child was struck and hit her head so sometimes the speed that kills its just where the child was hit

    Limerick Bure,

I am indeed down there most weekends and have been for the past thirty years. My comments were directed at Limerick Gal with her suggestion that people do not speed in the area.

While i realise that a pedestrian crossing would not have prevented the accident it would more than likely make drivers (a lot of them not from the local area) aware that there is a school close by and that there are children playing in the area.

My dad has a mobile home facing that road and i can guarantee you that were you to sit outside it for an hour or so it would then come to your notice that motorists are speeding on that road.

There is a big chance of a child surviving an accident if hit by a car going 50kmh. Have a seat on the road and i challenge you to spot 10 cars out of 100 sticking to that 50kmh.

re comments from careys road resident
i have been down in ballybunion since i was small i know what the roads are like and they are making them for pedestrians and one ways to stop accidents what has the school got to do with the accident it was a tragic accident and no pedestrian crossing would have help in this situation and if you are down there as much as i am then you know what children are like they see no danger down there

Bock the Robber your blog must be boring your always on this one.
  • Squid
From the retport anyway it would seem that they were supervised.

Tom callous comment, please take the family into account I am sure they are upset enough, the driver who I am also sympathetic with, must also be devastated too,
  • BockTheRobber
Tom just asked if the children were supervised crossing the road. It's a reasonable question.

    Re comments from Limerick Gal.

I was there at the scene on Sunday, and the fact is that people DO SPEED on that road. The majority of people who leave the town speed up directly after the petrol station. The majority of people coming from Listowel to Ballybunion do not slow down until they reach the petrol station.

The increase of speed from 50kmh to 80kmh does not come into being until you are 200 yards passed Parklands Caravan Park.

Please also note that this accident happened only twenty yards from the Ballybunion junior school.

A tragic accident. The girl in question has a mobile home only feet away from my own and my heart goes out to her and her family.

The school has been onto Kerry County Council for a number of years now asking that a pedestrian crossing be placed on the road.

It is a sad thing to say but it was only a matter of time before someone got killed on that road.

    Sorry folks,
Its really up to drivers to expect the unexpected expecially in built up area's.

My Thought's are with the family!

This is so so sad and my sympathies go out to the parents.

It brings to mind years ago, as a teen I was down in kilkee with a few friends, and I can remember that kids were playing chicken with cars outside the arcade, one of the kids didn't run fast enough and was knocked clear through the air by a car in front of me, he was unconscious, and he was young, about 6 or 7, and I dunno, but I don't think that kids that young should be left in the charge of other kids.

i agree with gero more pedestrian crossing are needed but i do not think it would have stopped an accident like this happening when children do not see dangers of the road and just running out in front of cars children need to be supervised and the drivers to take care when driving

Jesus tom that's a terrible thing to say, i'm sure the parents are blaming themselves without reading thoughtless remark like yours.
  • Gero
Very sad thing to happen. No courtesy is been shown by drivers to the many people walking around ballyb. Pedestrian crossings are needed.
  • Tom
    were the children supervised?
  • limerick gal
i was there for the weekend children run from evert direction as children do but those roads are not that bad people are not driving mad in that area but it was a tragic accident my thoughts are with the family and the family that knocked her down
  • raggedtrousers
i'm only surprised more people aren't killed on the roads.
