i agree with careys road resident about the speeding in that area not by locals but by passers by or people on holiday
about the sppeding but not that a child would survive an accident if hit by a car at 50kmh as i lost a child after being struck by a car that was travelling at 40 kmh it was where the child was struck and hit her head so sometimes the speed that kills its just where the child was hit

Limerick Bure,

I am indeed down there most weekends and have been for the past thirty years. My comments were directed at Limerick Gal with her suggestion that people do not speed in the area.

While i realise that a pedestrian crossing would not have prevented the accident it would more than likely make drivers (a lot of them not from the local area) aware that there is a school close by and that there are children playing in the area.

My dad has a mobile home facing that road and i can guarantee you that were you to sit outside it for an hour or so it would then come to your notice that motorists are speeding on that road.

There is a big chance of a child surviving an accident if hit by a car going 50kmh. Have a seat on the road and i challenge you to spot 10 cars out of 100 sticking to that 50kmh.

re comments from careys road resident
i have been down in ballybunion since i was small i know what the roads are like and they are making them for pedestrians and one ways to stop accidents what has the school got to do with the accident it was a tragic accident and no pedestrian crossing would have help in this situation and if you are down there as much as i am then you know what children are like they see no danger down there

Tom just asked if the children were supervised crossing the road. It's a reasonable question.

Re comments from Limerick Gal.

I was there at the scene on Sunday, and the fact is that people DO SPEED on that road. The majority of people who leave the town speed up directly after the petrol station. The majority of people coming from Listowel to Ballybunion do not slow down until they reach the petrol station.

The increase of speed from 50kmh to 80kmh does not come into being until you are 200 yards passed Parklands Caravan Park.

Please also note that this accident happened only twenty yards from the Ballybunion junior school.

A tragic accident. The girl in question has a mobile home only feet away from my own and my heart goes out to her and her family.

The school has been onto Kerry County Council for a number of years now asking that a pedestrian crossing be placed on the road.

It is a sad thing to say but it was only a matter of time before someone got killed on that road.
