Slow news week

Doubtless something major will blow up as soon as this is posted but it looks like people are gone on holidays to Kilkee a bit earlier than usual this year, things are fairly quiet, so below are some minor bits of trivia from around the city and environs…

Bar 3 on Bedford Row has recently been sold to Fordmount developments and there are talks that the building will be renovated to bring it more in tune with the other recent renovations that are taking place on Bedford Row.

The Quality hotel in Roxboro, fondly referred to by locals as the South Hillton is to be rebranded and from the start of September will be known as the Maldon Hotel…

Another bit of rebranding going on around town at the minute is the changing of the local Shell and Statoil garages to their new name of Topaz. The Shell in Corbally now has its new signage proudly on display…

The NRA and Direct Route, builders of the Limerick tunnel are having an open day on Saturday out at Coonagh between 10am and 4pm so people can see progress being made.. The five concrete sections each of which are the length of a soccer pitch and approx 40 feet tall have been built on site. Head out to the Clonmacken roundabout and follow the signs for the park and ride facility to gain entry to the site.

Michael O’Leary was back in the news during the week with a somewhat suprising statement that the Ryanair operation out of Shannon is losing money and that they are living off the ernings of luggage and sandwiches!! Speaking to the Dail transport committee the Ryanair CEO stated that Shannon is only one of only two of the 28 Ryanair bases that is losing money and if costs increase at the airport, the company’s operation at Shannon will be devastated.
“I am not known for hanging around, losing money. Shannon is one of only two bases where we lost money and we have lost money every year for the past three years. Why do we do it? It is part of our commitment to Ireland”, he said.

IF you want to get nostalgic there is an article in the Leader about lonely phoneboxes in Ireland! Apparently there are 17 of them that have made just one call in the last year and the phone box in Pallaskenry is one of them
