Totally agree with you Dobber.Alot of people seem to rejoice when another bland retail park, shopping development is built in Limerick yet there is no provision made for parks, pitches, gyms, schools, etc.
There needs to be some stipulation in the planning legislation that doesn't allow builders build without the above.
The problems that exist in Limerick, the greater Dublin area(places like Balbriggan, Swords etc) stem from myopic planning- no thinking about projected population increases etc.
How long did it take to get the skatepark up and running in Mount Kenneth? Years I'd imagine.
Then you see all the City Councillers giving a pat on the back to themselves as if they've just built some recreational wonderland rather than a small skatepark that could/should have ben put in place before.
There use to be a playground down in Westfields -no longer there.
The pitch down there is run down -don't see anything done about it.
The so-called re-development of Shelbourne Park looks like a massive disappointment from what I can see.
With the current economic climate in a dire state, it's not likely we'll see much improvement in this area.

I see the impact of bad planning where I live, builders were given planning for new estates, retail parks, apartments and hotels millions was spent on these developments and builders made millions in profit with nothing put back into the community in other words loads of new developments residential and retail which has choked up the roads and nothing done for the existing and new communities not even as much as a playground for the thousands of kids living in the existing and new areas but hey if they get bored they can always go shopping....The builders came and built on every green space available and then ran with their profits.
I'd like to see a system where if a builder gets planning for a multi million euro development there should be terms and conditions that would see them having to invest a certain amount into creating a recreational area for new and existing residents.

Weasel words from the bloodsucking County Council.

If Gallaghue wanted to espouse "forward thinking....and vision" perhaps he might at some stage propose a merger of these two lame-duck authorities into a cohesive administrative unit.

Or would the inner circle be too worried about the job losses, not least their own.

Sooner these Norman-Saxon Counties are scrapped and just kept for - of all people - the GAA, who hold them sacred, the better.
