Newstalk coming to town

The Right Hook with George Hook and The Moncrieff Show with Sean Moncrieff are to be broadcast from O’Connell Street on Thursday and Friday.

Regeneration costs

A price has been put on the cost of the regeneration project involving the building of over 3,000 houses in the city in a ten year lifespan. Current cost: €1 billion… I wonder how strong that “ring fence” will be? With the current economic situation, many will be sceptical as to what will be achieved. The master plan is due to be unveiled at the end of the month.

Sports

Limerick 37 played one of their best games of the season and beat Dundalk 2-0 last friday night in Jackman park, the superblues were on top all game and but for some wayword finishing could have hit Dundalk for six!!  Next up at Jackman are Bohemians in two weeks.  Limerick man Steve FInnan has hit the headlines on the last day of the transfer window in the premier league and has agreed a move from Liverpool to spanish side Espanyol for an undisclosed fee.

Munster are on the preseason trail and after a good victory over the US eagles in America last week on a scoreline of 46 to 22, they followed it up with a 35-14 win against London Irish at Musgrave park last week.  Munster kick off in the magners league this friday away to Edinburgh.

That was quick!

According to the Limerick Leader, the Hilton group are pulling out of Limerick after less than eighteen months in the city!!  The operation is to be (re) taken over by the Strand hotel group who had bought the old Jurys hotel which previously was on the site before being knocked down and rebuilt.. Thankfully there will be no job losses and apparently things will continue as Normal!

    to the first commenter

you have to remember we have lives outside of the site, besides, not a hell of a lot is going on. am just back from the UK myself and haven't had time to scour the press this week.

and don't knock the efforts of the other writers, they are doing it voluntarily as well.

    Well said JJ.
No doubt places like Birdhill will become larger now that it's a quick hop to the City centre.

the effect that the train connection could have on the house prices in Castleconnell could be quite significant and maybe that is something that will speak louder than words to irish ears in this economic climate. I have the feeling that outside of Dublin the Irish attitute to public transport is that it is for old people, students and the poor. This type of snobbery is so backward. Think of the possibilities of a night link service in to limerick city at the weekends it would allow people to go for a night out with out having to worry about drink driving issues. Think of the traffic that could come off the road if the schools could be serviced by a special morning service. Imaging the possibility of a University to City service. Couple the train service with a free bicycle service and bike lanes and Limerick becomes a cutting edge modern european city like Copenhagen. I know there will be crime and other such problems but should that fear prevent us from trying to find solutions to serious problems with the city infrastructure?
We have been sitting too long in traffic for 40 minutes upwards just to make a 10 minute journey and in the boom times very little has been done to fix this. Hopefully this is the beginning of a great change.

Sean Moncrieff mildly entertaining but seems to be 'away' most of the time leaving some lame replacement and
George Hook is a total bore , so big swing of a monkeys... . I hope they take a wrong turn on the way down .

Hope it's (Nenagh-Limerick rail service) well supported and emulates the Ennis lines success. Wonder if there's an option to put a "Park and Ride" stop at Lisnagry (possibly after the Limerick-Nenagh leg of the N7 motorway bypasses that crossing next year)

The amount of unused track around the city is a real waste, for a relatively small investment in platform stops, rolling stock and upgrades, the city could have a number of commuter lines running along existing track helping reduce road traffic, especially to Raheen/Patrickswell and Ballykeefe etc.

No point harping on about putting that short link into Shannon Airport either, even though the extension of the Limerick-Ennis line into Galway will make it an even more viable option. The lack of political will probably ensures it never happens for whatever reason. Even though it's next or near impossible to find a parking space at the Airport these days.
