Is there anyone in Limerick not building a shopping centre at the moment? I think the Opera centre is 5 years too late. Projects that are well underway are already running into problems because of the downturn and the oversaturation of shopping centres. I know Limerick City Council want to try and stem the hemmorage of shops and rates to the shopping centres the County council has allowed to be built all around the city but they have missed the boat.

The huge Parkway Valley centre is rumoured to be in trouble and very little activity has been seen there in weeks. The shopping centre across the road from there has been completely empty since it was finished 3-4 months ago. I wouldn't be surprised if the Opera Centre gets shelved or worst still runs out of steam half way through like the parkway valley.

How will it be an opera centre?

I think it will be a shopping centre. Why can't they call it that?

I know a famous opera singer lived there, but if someone who climbed Everest had lived there, would they call it the Mountaineering Centre?

I've not received notice (we made a submission) of the actual decision and any conditions that may or may not have been attached.

I've seen no sensible reason provided in the application or the why the four façades on Ellen st. need to be demolished. That they should be retained was the decision of An Bord Pleanala and I doubt they would be inclined to reverse their opinion should an appeal happen. Given the length of time the Clancy strand ABP appeal took it could be 8 months or even more before a decision would come back.

Even if the levelled the site and put display signs / bollards around it for now. It's a terrible eyesore at the minute and portrays an horrific image of the city centre, particularly on Patrick and Ellen Streets.

Let's just hope this development is finally going ahead without any more hitches.
