Dell speculation beginning to snowball

Dell’s policy of remaining tight lipped about a recent Wall Street Journal story on the future of their Limerick plant is not doing them any favours, as it has sparked an increasing amount of speculation.  It has gotten to a point now where even Limerick Chamber of Commerce has stated that it is undermining confidence in the midwest region.

Coverage of these concerns were covered on RTE yesterday and have made the front page of the Independent today.

With an estimated six percent of all employment in the Midwest region dependent on Dell, a loss of confidence amid this speculation and unanswered questions from Dell can only serve to do some serious damage to the economy, a “death by a thousand cuts” if you will.

Were they to come out and say “Yeah, we are shipping out” then the short term reprocussions might be severe, but it would get the trauma over with to make way for some sort of a recovery.

sure they couldnt not train them??????
What did you expect them to do...sorry we're not training them cause they might take our jobs........
  • To the point
only one line was trained, alot of dell big biys were in poland to train and oversee everything,i have neen working on mondays bar one in the last 2 months and so was all my department

I agree with Kevin, there has been no work on a monday in dell for the last 3 weeks because there is nothing to build but there has been over time during the week and weekend shift, were is the logic in that, leftwinger is that true or not, also how many people in Dell actually trained the people to do the same job in Poland, anyone that needed to be trained for the polish jobs WERE trained in Delll Limerick so again Kevin has a valid point, People in Dell were always aware that once poland was up and running they were out of jobs but they still trained them, they will have on-one to blame but themselves

"What’s wrong with polish working, they are willing and able,IMO they work harder than the rest of the Irish myself included here in my dept."

I have to say I am sick to death of people putting down the Irish worker. I almost left Ireland in ‘86 when things were much worse. I had my green card for the US, but stayed because I got a job in Galway. I paid over 60p in the pound and worked hard so all you young people could have jobs in Ireland today. I get pissed off when people say the Polish or some other non-nationals work harder than us .They don’t, it just seems that way because they are here to make money not to say and lay down roots. All people who go to other countries to work ,do work harder because they work longer. The Polish are now leaving in droves, either going home to their own Polish Tiger, or to other countries. It's time to say good bye to them and thank them for their help over the years. Some will say good riddens, others will say a pity. But whatever, it's now time to forget about work immigrants and try to bring home our Irish Diaspora in the states with all their skills and experience they have learned from abroad. Bet you the Polish government is doing the same for its Diaspora

The yank is going to have some story to tell the stupid Irish keep them happy for another year at least
  • what kevin said
Being a dell employee for last 6 years I agree with Kevin about the managment in Limerick from Line managers up have seen great (Irish) workers not been kept on in fovour of ?? ya you know
  • leftwinger
Kevin...you hav'nt a clue what your talking about.
  • kevin
if Dell does go, both dell employees and managemnet have a lot to answer for, Dell employees were very eager to train the polish people that will eventually take their jobs in poland. you reap what you sow, and Dell management were running 12 hours shifts and then sending the employees home during normal hours, this has made production cost in dell jump out of control, i mean were would you hear of this, stay back and do overtime for time and a half and then send them home on flat time. this wouldnt happen in any other factory. as for out politions they are putting their head in the sand and hoping it doesnt happen, whey dont they get off the fat ass's and ask the question so that they can plan for it if it does happen.....

Being a Dell employee I agree that there needs to be an announcement sooner rather that later , I cant see manufacturing been stopped completely here in Limerick for a few years yet , although there could be particular retail products outsourced to ODM's (original design manufactures ) in the near future , the same as HP has done a couple of years ago which may result in job loses here at the limerick plant which would be temp employees. HP started outsourcing there manufacturing 2 years ago and have just announced 24,800 job loses worldwide over the next 3 years.
Interesting enough Mike Cannon (the yank To the point mentioned) will be here in limerick next Tuesday , his previous job was CEO of a company which outsourced manufacturing from companies like HP so his background is in the field Dell are actively perusing (outsourcing manufacturing )

I know this may sound easier said then done - but in reality dell workers should down tools and stop working until ye get an answer. they are major playing ye here.....regardless of the outcome they shouldnt be messing ye around like this. I know maby ye might not want to actually hear it yet but at the same time the yanks are gettin away with murder with this carry on. i hope to Jesus no one doing unpaid overtime at the moment....

It happened to me a few years back with an american company and the biggest mistake we made was just letting the waiting happen...then letting the announcement be made and we were so prepared at that stage we just said ah ya grand.,.....and that was it......and we ploughed away until the company closed a few weeks later...we got very little notice...neither will dell when it happens cause they wont want production affected. Please try and realise that while ye have some kind of power over them ye should demand answers. imaigin this happening in the public sector. granted there are arguments against the public sector...but no one makes a fool of their unions. Your only weapon now is production...and ye should be using it....

right and this rumour of the meeting has been going on how long. Americans dont work it that way -they tell you meeting tomorrow...or meeting in two hours. they def dont give a weeks notice for the press to have a field day!
  • To the point
Next thursday an all staff meeting will take place, hosted by a yank,he's hardly coming over to say everythings all right
  • bantra man
The Maker: I think everyone knows that at this stage but now its just a matter of when. so thats what most of us are waiting for. The waiting isnt fair on the workers and the people depending on dells business. We need to know one way or another

Listen Guy’s, let’s take Molex last year. Molex started “lean manufacturing “in all its factories a few years ago and of course” lean manufacturing “ is making more with less, cutting out scrap and so on. In the outcome and at the end this means job losses, what ever you want to call it. And it meant 150 job losses in Molex in Shannon, small by some standards but still job losses. Lean manufacturing is another one of those American / Asian ideas to save money which is good for the company, but bad for employees. Dell has gone that way as well and it must make sure it’s getting the best from its manufacturing plants around the world. Dell was once number one in the computer world but is now number two, HP is number one, but is does not make computers . It gets factories in the Far East to make them and then puts on its name on. Makes sense in this cost control world. But loses jobs in a high cost economy. Ireland is now a high cost economy. So what’s Dell going to do? Same as Molex world wide. Move manufacturing to a low cost base. It’s not rocket science.

To the Point and Limerick guy - you are both saying otherwise on the forum so its all getting a bit confusing now!
  • bantra man
so ... assume there is no news again today?
  • Limerick Guy
I'm in Dell. Some of us have a meeting ya but we are pretty sure that there will be no announcement it is just a general meeting for a large dept.
  • To the point
    No meeting taking place
  • bantra man
This carry on cant go on much longer. The fact they saying nothing says it all really. There is a mention on the forum of an announcement today. Any news on that? Can anyone from Dell actually verify there is a meeting?
