Explosives believed to be for Limerick-based criminals

A south Limerick City gang is believed to be the buyer of a massive stash of explosives which were seized in Galway over the weekend.

The seizure was made as part of a European police operation to tackle organised crime.  According to today’s Limerick Leader, over 200 guns were seized by police in Holland, which are understood to have been destined for the same gang.

The discovery of 17.5 Kg of industrial explosives was made after a car was intercepted by Gardai near Oranmore, County Galway on Friday.

Since then, one man has appeared in court in relation to the seizure.

30 year old Oliver Mannion, of Renville West, Oranmore was before a Galway court today charged with the unlawful possession of explosives.

An application for bail made by Mannion’s legal representative was rejected and he was remanded in custody until Friday, where he will appear at Harristown Court in Castlerea.

RTE reports that there are three other men in custody in relation to the seizure, none of which, have yet been charged.

Starkie, your goin on like a nobhead. 90% of those people were caught thru ratting and not from garda interigation - or self volunteered statements eg owen treacy - what garda work was involved with that again? if he died, those 5 would never have been caught

So well done to the gardai for having ears, aren't they fantastic. I live near the gang ye all go on about. i know some of the small frys and seen some of them grow up from innocent (not scummy at all - seriously!) youngfellas to bein sucked into this "gangsta" lifestyle and that's all it is to them is about bein cool and havin a name and puttin guns on their bebo pages.

the gardai do fuck all, i mean fuck all. they don't even search them when they pull them and instead have the oul banter with them and take a slaggin. it's sad but true, half the gaurds are afraid of em

if you have evidence of corruption by certain members of the guardai, then bring it to the attention of the chief superintendant, but i bet you havent got any evidence, anybody can make a sweeping statement like that. you say they havent locked up any significant criminals well how about these then. the five guys who murdered kieran keane, all big players in limericks underworld. also wayne and john dundon two very danderous people. big fish, too. gary campion, and his brother william, two sadistic killers, now safely behind bars. cowboy hanley a very big fish indeed. a guy named mcnamara who got life for murdering a guy called odonohoue in broad street, he was a big player in limericks underworldi and dozens of other guys doing years for drugs, would take me all night to name them . not of course forgetting liam keane and his ally who areboth on remand for carrying a gun. they also got cristy keane who was believed to be the godfatherof crime in limerick. and the ones who are still at large dont have a life style they are looking over their shoulders every time they come out of their hovels sopme of them have been shot others stabbed, what a great life they have.

    |'d have to agree with Pat Johnston. The Gardai in this city are a joke. The criminals/scumbags have been running rings around them for years. Some of the Gardai/Detectives are more corrupt than the criminals themselves and that's always been half the problem. There are, of course, some genuine Gardai in there but with lack of resources and a proper justice system, the criminals, in essence, still run this city. It's always been a case of 'you scratch my back'... 'I'll scratch yours'.

The Gardai don't want to be directly involved and who could blame them. They are not equipped. Even with the new fan dangle 'starship trooper' get up, it's not going to make a blind bit of a difference. Their intention- scare tactics. Not much use. The Gardai will tell you that there are no gangs in Limerick and feuding has stopped. They make a couple of arrests every now and then just to keep the media and public happy, make it look like they are trying to tackle the problem, when in fact these guys are released shortly afterwards, usually without charge and a file sent to the DPP - waste of tax payers money! They are making no significant arrests, just small fry. They need to tackle the big frys so to speak.

starkie....every Saturday when teenagers are in Limerick city, there is at least one instance of random assult & mugging by scumbag teenagers. The usual garda advice(if they decide to turn up & if they even bother to take notes) is usually for the victim to forget about it.

Limerick has been badly let down by the Gradai over the years through their incompetence, laziness and cowardice in certain situations. They have have taken everything that the state has to offer and given F All in return. To allow them to escape their share of blame for what has happended in this city is not credible.

They have allowed a crowd of illiterate thugs destroy the lives of many people in this city. We are hardly talking about master criminals here, just a shower of low lives.

I don't share your vote of confidence in "jim browne willie keane and john kerins"

me says.you say i shouldnt idolise the guards for the dismantling of the gangs, thats their job you say, well when ever i have someone do work for me i usually thank them and of course i pay them but im still glad that theirs people available do the jobs, and btw, they are usually foreingers the irish dont seem to want to work. so jim browne willie keane and john kerins i salute you and your colleagues for a god job done in putting away some of the most savage people in limerick. you might be beter off helping the gurdai instead of critiscing them from the comfort and safety of your computer. they have locked up dozens of these scum and they will bring down the others too.

pat johnston. a lot of this wasnt the fault of the cops, a lot of it was the fault of the governments who failed the judiciary and the cops by not bringing in extra powers. even at that its not an easy task to gain evidence to put these people in the dock, even in america where the cops have a lot of powers. like phone tapping, the hoods still find their way around the law, mafia for instance. i strill stand by my opinion that the cops in limerick are doing well against the hoods. they will never bve able to put them all away, they cant even do that in russia where they have very severe laws. same in brazil the uk, australia is even riddled with crime.
  • willie o deas long lost cuz
    LMAO at hoof....

your talking crap, starkie, well you usually do. what about all the unsoled murders.
  • pat Johnston
starkie......I reckon that you are taking the piss.

Are these the same Gardai who let a couple of gangs ignorant thugs get so powerfull and disrupt the lives of whole communities ?
  • me
They are no more heroes to me than the guy that gives me out my morning paper when I pay him for it, it's their job don't idolise them for it.

Re: The Hyde Road mob, it's great to see the Mc Dundons falling apart, they honestly thought nobody would be able stop them and they were right for years and years but the people of this city had enough of those animals and would take no more and even their groupies later learned that they have no respect for anyone or anything only money. They stood on the wrong toes and now they are fighting with themselves, I love it.
  • starkie
just proves how unintelligent they are. well its very hard to take them down by ordinary legal means, they have so many people scared, understanibly so, too,but they are now dropping their guard and i think they will make a lot of sliop ups and join the others, in jail where they should be, i would like to take this opportuinity also to salute our real heros, the senior guardai who are working round the clock to take them down, and dont forget they have dismantled most of them, superintendant jim browne, chef superintendant willie keane, superintenant john kerins and all the other men and women in blue. these are the people who are my heros.

Is anyone surprised that lowlife thugs might fight with each other?

Apparently there was a falling out, nothing trivial I hope, and probably related to the find of explosives in Galway.

Hate quoting the Indo but this is their slant :

"Gardaí are bracing themselves for a war of attrition as one of the country's most notorious criminal gangs threatens to implode. Fears are mounting that there will be several reprisals after a serious split in the notorious Limerick-based McCarthy-Dundon gang.

Gardai are on the alert after a clash between two key figures at the weekend which left one dangerous criminal with a serious injury.
The row broke out after a garda seizure of a haul of explosives destined for the outfit.

The criminal gang is now deeply divided after one senior gang member, who was recently released from prison, assaulted his cousin - who is also heavily involved in organised crime - leaving him with a deep laceration to the head. The two cousins fought in a house in the Hyde Road area of the city on Sunday night. The 24-year-old injured man is a close associate of Anthony 'Noddy' McCarthy, who was convicted of the gangland murder of Kieran Keane in 2003.

It is believed that he was struck with a bottle from behind by his assailant.
His attacker, who is 21 years old, is under constant surveillance by gardai and is at the centre of a number of ongoing investigations. He is a close ally of Dessie Dundon, who was convicted of the Keane murder.

The injured man had to have staples inserted in his head, but left the A&E department of the Mid-Western Regional Hospital when gardai arrived.
A spokeswoman for the HSE confirmed that the injured man left the hospital of his own accord at 11.50pm on Sunday.

After the violent incident his home on the city's southside was vandalised, along with two vehicles. Windows in the house were broken and there was substantial damage to parked vehicles. It is understood that a large group of associates witnesses both the assault and vandalism."....

I heard on news talk today that two senior members of the mcarthy/dundon gang were fighting on hyde road.Could this mean theres a split in the gang?
  • Gary
They must be crushed by the state,or else we will be all victims.
  • Hoof
Dundons I'd imagine...maybe they needed to blast some underground rock to build a few tunnels to connect their mini-castles on Hyde Road or are conducting a particle accelerator project involving hurling grams of cocaine at each other at high speed under the horse-track in Cals.

Though come to think of it, the HSE & City Council would probably have built one for them, it being their culture and all they wouldn't need planning permission. (Seeing as they haven't so far)

    What gang?Any hints.
