Peace talks between feuding gangs “fucking unacceptable” Mayor

Mayor John Gilligan is quoted in the City Leader as describing peace talks between rival feuding gangs as “fucking unacceptable.

“I would find it absolutely abhorrent if the gangs are meeting in order to regulate their trade,” he told the paper.

Stating that all they have brought to Limerick is blood, death and misery, he suggested that they go out of business “in a hurry.”

Having been a member City Council and dealing with numerous City Managers, he should be well used to talking to people who don’t pay a blind bit of notice.

On a related matter to this, it seems the Clarion is the place to hold your meetings.

On monday, the boards of the Regeneration committees met at the Clarion to ratify the master plan for the city.

A meeting at the same hotel was scheduled this Thursday by another group hoping to improve their lot, that group being members of rival gangs who were not in prison. It was hoped that the latest round of discussions could bring an end to their feud.

The meeting had to be cancelled after the media became aware of it.

The Clarion hotel boasts 7 conference rooms, suitible for groups of 2 to 240, and when you gotta rush to that shooting range in Eastern Europe, you will be happy to know it’s only 20 minutes from the Airport.

@ Project X...twisted idea but I can see the benefits!

@ Biggie...You need some spelling lessons...
  • biggie
project x says. that would only satisfy your obvoious sadistic, nature. you ned to be locked up, your a dangerous sadist, who needs to see a psycholigis. maybe your watching to many violent moviest.
  • ProjectX
D, how can we achieve that?

I would like to expand on Bobo's point. Lets lock them into a handball alley, fill it with gas and light a match.

Would their demise be a loss to anyone? What would the result be? Imagine, no more could they disgrace us. A clear victory for the greater good.

    Am I a little OTT!

the mayor is right.the problem in limerick is the people are afraid of these gangs.they are full of shit.there is more of us.we need 2 take them on and stop them puttin fear on streets of limerick and stop them giving the best city in ireland a bad name.we let them do watevr they want and no1 stands up to them
  • rr
I'd agree with ProjectX. Really dont think this guy should be the face of the city. Just doesn't have the right demeanour to represent a city properly.

    Just my opinion though
  • boxerdog
where were all the other cllr.s when he spoke ?
  • ProjectX
Hi all, I don't think the mayor has the ability to project
the sort of image of our county that we would like him to. Surely there is someone there with a little more charisma!

I always think of him on the Prime Time special a few years ago. He went for the bait from the the producers and ended up doing serious damage to the reputation of our city and county.

    bang on bock.
peace talks so as they can operate their drugs trade with more comfort. but it will never work. because limerick is too small. and what happens is that the pushers take customers from one another causing loss of money to the opposing gangs. this as you can realize causes anger leading to feuding. its never going to change. never. too much money involved. too much hatred, too many unsettled scores. in twenty years time their grandchildren wil be killing each other.
  • BockTheRobber
Look. There's only one reason for these gangs to meet, and that's to reach an agreement so that they can each carry on their drug-dealing more efficiently.

Let us not legitimise these criminals by speculating on whatever "meetings" they might hold. This is not a convention of the UN Security Council we're talking about. This is a bunch of skobes trying to find better ways of selling drugs to our children.

I think we all agree with what the Mayor said, if not the way he said it. If he is trying to improve the city's image, then he should really chose his words more carefully. I respect the office of the Mayor of Limerick, but so should Alderman Gilligan, and refrain from using expletives.
  • countrygirl
Shane you've gone from being offended to absolutely paranoid!
I have no hidden agenda nor do I belong to a group of anon persons.
My opinion on Gilligan is just that my opinion. The Mayoralty has no substance he can achieve nothing in this feud situation. He can use profanities all he wants but he is powerless.
This 'feud' is far too deep routed for it to disappear and if there are any talks its on a business level for these Drug Kingpins.
It takes a few murders for things to quieten down because the brunt of Gardai is brought to bear on these animals. Action is needed constantly to rid our society of this plague.
My apologies initially for not explaining myself properly.
  • starkie
    what a brainless idea.
  • bobo
i say let them sort it out the right way. Lock them in a handball alley and give them chainsaws. Last man standin wins the right to knock out a few ounces at the weekend. :P
  • "Shane you are fairly defensive about all this, jesus country girl is just trying to add her few cents worth."
    Hi Limericklad,
I see reports of anonymous individuals organising secret meetings with criminal gangs.
I see one figure - the mayor coming out publicly and saying (albeit colourfully) what most people are thinking
then I come on here and there is another anonymous contributor saying the mayor is a coward and from my reading of their contribution (two cents worth), they appear to be saying that the meetings are necessary.

That is how I read it.

If that is defensive or offensive, I'm sorry.

Maybe I'm reading countrygirl contributions incorrectly, If I am then apologies to them in advance as well.

Look I hope it goes on just to see the rest of the scum kill each other, they are parasites, blood thirsty scum of the earth and when they look at their own kids they want them to be the same as daddy and mammy, our rep is long gone and will never recover, let these animals show the whole world what they really are, vermin, putting their kids lives in danger, all they are is heroin dealing scum.

Do you think they will get away with killing that guy in calls, or Kieran Keane? That when Christy Keane and Wayne Dundon get out they will just fade into normal society? You must be having a laugh if you do, these "people" are not like you and me they are gone in the head.
  • Ironsharpethiron
So the gangs want to regulate their drugs trade................will they be paying vat next, giving health insurance, shares paid out in bags of coke. The whole thing's a joke and the states institutions are only interested in picking up there pay packet at the end of the week....
  • limericklad
    Hey guys,
Shane you are fairly defensive about all this, jesus country girl is just trying to add her few cents worth. John it appears the keanes and collopys are gone their seperate ways at least from recent media reports which are often wrong, so thus we have many groups with some now likely to talk peace at least to let them pedal heroin in these estates peacefully. Lets not knock each other here we all want the same thing drug dealers out and law abiding citizens in. Complaining about the mayor is all part of the process of public discussion and country girl fair play for gettin involved.
  • john
this peace thing is all lies cause the keans have said and all ways will say that they never will call peace
  • Thanks boxerdog.

Cad e sin, That is a fair enough point. However I presume the reason it made top story in the Leader was because of the passionate delivery.

It is an interesting question? Do we the people of the city grant this power to the regeneration agency? ( jimmy woulfe's source suggested that it was someone linked to the agency involved in organising). Is this what we want? No more feud stuff but other activities to be allowed go on.
Is that what is being proposed?
  • boxerdog
back island ... assumpta park ..lee estate... and the island bank.... and all the green lol :)
  • Hi countrygirl. I live in St Marys, have done for many years now but have never heard it referred to as 'back island'. But maybe I'm missing some exciting circle that does refer to it as such. The/de island maybe, indeed Kings Island formally but never 'back island'.

Starkie, I have a feeling that I have picked up Country girl correctly but maybe they will explain themselves. I would be particularly interested in further explanation of this line.

Remarks are all well and good its action that’s needed. Theres always an alternative reason for these so called peace talks .

What are you suggesting the Mayor should do? Countrygirl
  • cad e sin
I can swear along with the best of them - fuck, shit, arse...proved it - but I'm not sure it's appropriate for the Mayor.
  • starkie
    shane.
i think you picked up country girl wrong in part of her blog on the mayor. when she said great orator he is i think she was being complimentary. because no matter what anyone could say about gilligan. he is a good orator.
  • countrygirl
@Shane In fairness I'm talking about our Mayor . I'm straight out the door to take a class on how to improve mywriting skills.
Remarks are all well and good its action that's needed. Theres always an alternative reason for these so called peace talks .
St.Mary's Park is 'the back island', maybe a geography lesson might be in order Shane.
  • Who are you talking about Squid or John Gilligan?

The 'back island'- Where is that?

The fact that I need clarification on both of these might suggest that you should improve on your own writing skills before criticising others ability to communicate.

I think most people in this city would agree with Mayor Gilligan's remarks.
  • countrygirl
This from the guy that will run straight down the back island cowering after he makes any statement.
    Great orator that he is.
