Medical card move “a con” – protest organiser

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

A planned march through the city centre on Saturday in protest at the removal of universal medical cards for the over 70s will go ahead despite changes to the government plan to remove it this morning.

At a press conference earlier today in Dublin, Taoiseach Brian Cowen announced that the income limit for those over 70 to receive a medical card would be increased to €700 a week for a single person and €1,400 a week for a couple.

The plan to remove the universal medical card for people over 70 resulted in the resignation of one Fianna Fail TD, two Fianna Fail councillors in Kerry, two Progressive Democrats councillors in Galway, and the withdrawal of support for the government from an independent TD, as well as numerous protests from government backbenchers.

However, those campaigning against the changes to the scheme remain unimpressed. A public meeting this morning had to find a larger location due to huge turnout.

Meanwhile, the organiser of Saturday’s protest here in Limerick City, Phonsie Franklin, (72) described the move as a “con”

In an interview with the Limerick Leader he said, “At the outset, the Government wanted to save €100m, but only five per cent of people are losing their medical card. The government are only getting €5m. What the hell is that all about? It just serves to allow the government to con the people again. Next year, 20 per cent of people will lose their card, and the year after it will be 30 per cent. I think the only reason Cowen announced these changes was because the Government did not want to back down completely.”

Other activists groups look unlikely to cancel their protests either. In a statement released prior to this mornings press conference, Cian Prenderville, Limerick Campaign for a Real Public Health Service, said “We will not accept any means testing of the basic human right to health care. Now that the government is on the back foot, this is the time to step up the pressure to force them to back down completely.”

Local Green representative, Trish Brennan welcomed the change. In her post press conference statement she stated that under the new criteria, a vast majority of those whould retain their medical cards, and that those who have the 70+ cards whould not have to undergo a means test.

Under the new scheme, those with a medical card will be notified of the new limits by the HSE and will be required to notify them if their income is over the cut-off limit.

UPDATE: Jan O’Sullivan, Labour Party spokesperson on health and Limerick TD has, since this morning’s press conference by the government and the public meeting held by campaigners, said in a statement that the government’s “U-turn” was a failure

“Having attended today’s rally in St Andrew’s Church, the point is loud and clear that that this measure is not enough. Nothing less than a complete withdrawal of the plan to scrap automatic entitlement to the card, will restore people’s confidence,” she has said in a statement.

Toireasa Ferris to represent Sinn Féin in Euro elections

Left to right: Tom Collopy (Limerick city council East constituency candidate) Mary Lou McDonald (Sitting MEP for Dublin, Toireasa Ferris (European election candidate for the South constituency) and Maurice Quinlivan (Limerick City Council north constituency candidate)

Sinn Féin have selected former Kerry Mayor Toiresa Ferris as their candidate for the European Elections in the South constituency.

The selection was made at the party’s convention in Tralee lover the weekend.

From her post selection statement:

“Next year’s European election is about securing a strong voice for Munster at the European table. Europe impacts on ordinary people in many ways – and the impact is not always a good one. In today’s Europe, too much power is being concentrated in Brussels; the free market gets priority over the rights of worker’s and the protection of public services; and ambitious plans are being laid for a militarised EU able to project its power overseas.”

“That is not the Europe that Sinn Féin wants. It is not the Europe that the majority of Irish voters who said No to the Lisbon Treaty want. And it is not the future for Europe that millions of citizens across this continent want to see.  Sinn Féin believes in a social Europe that puts the needs of people before the greed of corporations and bankers; a democratic Europe which its citizens can hold to account. That vision marks us out as different from all of the other Irish political parties. And that is the vision I intend to bring to the European parliament if elected next June. “

Sinn Fein will also be fielding two candidates in the City Council elections.  Tom Collopy will run in Limerick City East while Maurice Quinlivan will be running in Limerick City North.

When protests go bad

Monday, October 20th, 2008

With everyone looking for something to protest about, be it education cuts, the €10 travel levy, medical cards for the over 70s or the 1 percent income levy, spare a thought for those protests that go horribly wrong.

That is what happened to one Barney Sheehan, looking to get his message out his protest over the weekend didn’t quite go according to plan.

Sheehan (75) who would be better known for his involvement in the White House Poetry revival, climbed atop the Red Cross building in the city in an effort to protest at Limerick City Council’s failure to clean up the facade of the building.

The building is currently being used by the Beltable Arts Centre while their own building is undergoing renovation.

But Mr. Sheehan was forced to call for the assistance of the Fire Service when he got himself into difficulty. After spending an hour in cold conditions, the brigade managed to bring him down safely.

Good sporting weekend

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

The blues and the reds had a good weekend in sporting circles.  Munster put in a good performance away to Sale and won by 24 points to 16.  The red army were in control at 16-3 by half time but  a Sale fightback brought it back to 16 all.  However a try from David Wallace with 14 minutes to go followed by a Ronan O’Gara drop goal put Munster back in front 24-16.  A sin binning for Mafi with 8 minutes to go wasnt going to stop the Munster men from closing out the game and the are now in control of their Heineken cup pool with two games against Clermont Auvergne to come.

A bad start to the week for Limerick 37 with a thousand euro fine for the mess that occurred with the recent postponement of the game with Wexford youths. Wexford got the 3 points and were given the result 3-0. Leo the Lion is also banned from the sidelines until the end of the season after being hit with an FAI suspension also!

Things improved though as the week went on as the super blues had one of their best games of the season and a 5-1 win at home to Waterford on Friday night.  It rounded off a good week for the blues with the fundraiser on Thursday with Republic of Ireland Geovanni Trappatoni as guest speaker which was a rounding success and raised a lot of dosh to boot.  Fai Boss John Delaney got in on the act for the auction and paid 1,000 euro for a pair of tickets for the Munster v All Blacks games in Thomond Park! So you could say he paid the fine for the Wexford farce!!

New Limerick manager Justin McCarthy was an interested spectator as Adare beat Ahane 0-13 to 0-08 for the county Senior hurling title.  Shannon and Garryowen played out a 17-17 draw at thomond park on Friday night, the first AIB all Ireland League game played at the newly developed venue .
