Regeneration masterplan unveiled

When it was initially incorporated, The Limerick Regeneration Agency was expected to have a life of five years, however, following yesterday’s release of the regeneration masterplan, it now appears that the 3.1 Billion euro project will take ten years.

Here is a brief summary of what is contained within the plan

Moyross:
Public funding required: €727.7m
Private funding required €467.7m
Total: €1395.4m

  • Moyross to be divided into five estates, each having their own distinctive characteristics.  These estates will also have improved road networks.
  • A town centre for the area including a main street.
  • A Garda station to be built in the area
  • A railway station
  • Longpavement landfill site to be turned into a park
  • Almost 2,000 mixed residential units.

Southill/Ballinacurra Weston
Public funding required €647.5m
Private funding required €506.7m
Total €1154.2m

  • Indoor sports centre to be located on the site of the existing St. Enda’s sports centre.
  • 3,000 homes to be built in Southill, 2,200 of these will be sold on the open market.  Weston to get 350 new homes.
  • Galvone industrial estate to be rezoned from Industrial to general purpose.
  • The demolition and relocation of both Holy Family Church in Southill and Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Weston.
  • A new community and healthcare centre located where the Roxboro Shopping Centre is now.
  • Redevelopment of Caladonian Park.
  • Relocation of Limerick Senior College to the southside of the city.

St. Mary’s Park
Public funding required €299.6m
Private funding required €425.8m
Total 725.4m

  • St. Mary’s park to be divided into seven quarters, residents will be invited to name these quarters.
  • A new bridge linking the Island to Thomondgate
  • A riverside walkway around the entire island
  • Possibility of a viewing tower and marina.

The demolition of derelict houses in these areas has already begun, however it is unlikely that construction work will begin before 2010.

I just heard where the people from Limerick are been re located, the local authorities of Limerick are washing there hands free of these people by placing them outside Limerick. All they are doing is creating problems in the area were they will be placed. It's a dis grace that local autorities do not know how to tackle the problem. some much for the Garda in this country.

    ?
  • moll
not everyone in moyross leaves them roam.. horses can get off 2 not always the owners fault..

and incase you didnt know most people that live in moyross have stables built in their backs so that the horses cant roam but if a horses is found in the stable the owner can get aressted.. so you tell us what they should do cuz you obviously think you know it all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • frocky
Do those wealthy leave their horses on public property, getting in peoples way...??? no they don't. if they want to keep horses keep them on their own land, not let them roam on main roads!
  • moll
TO THE POINT:: i have been reading through the comments on this and you seem to have a say in everthing.. it comes across that you have a prolem with moyross and horses and most people wont agree with the statment that all people that like or own horses are scumbags..

    how do you figure that??

alot of wealthy people who dont live in moyross own horses.. are you calling them scumbags?????
  • jmccoy
The only people that will gain out of all this is the scumbags and builders. Typical of the mindset in this country that they all think that they can 'build' their way out of problems.

Lads i think everyone is missing something here. if you look at the island as a piece of land and nothing else its worth a fortune. it's a ten minute walk from town just like the ennis road but it doesn't have the hassle of all that traffic noise from the main road. you can only build a certain amount of accommodation there limiting the size of the estate, it has the possibility of really beautiful natural surroundings with the bank and river surrounding it. all in all it has the potential for a great place to raise a family. so i personally think when they get the people outta there i don't think they'll leave them back in. when the government smell money they'd sell there own mothers look at st john's i mean there trying to close a hospital in a city like limerick that's crying out for more medical services. and god help us if there a bridge built connecting thomondgate and the island we'll need watch towers then for sure
  • To the point
norma st leger nobody in moyross wants horses only the scumbags
  • To the person asking if the report is online. it is availible on the regeneration website

law abider don't want to be too hard on you but i have read the regen document and lo and behold they have a plan, firstly check out pg 8, the writings of a child, then pg27 where they state "there is a long standing culture" etc on to "provide land in general moyross area for new equine centre or community horse project" and "agency will facilitate the establishment of relevant structures to make proposal a reality" well heavens be praised, the overused term "moving forward" might become a reality for our great city, and MINDSETS of all concerned might see a degree of change. i hope my cynical rantings in other post did'nt dent yorur drive for better days, ultimatly we all want the same thing we just have different outlooks, by the way, its ok for people to agree and disagree its what makes it interesting, norma jean bell? now that was cynical ! i wish all those with a love and passion for all things equine the best of luck, hope and all who live with it.

The contents of the "Plan" can be downloaded from here if you've got the patience of a saint: http://www.limerickregeneration.ie/masterplans-...

All in all, it seems like a load of bollocks. I like the fact that a Garda station will be built in Moyross. I just wonder if it will happen near the beginning of the 10 years or near the end. I also wonder when this 10 year clock will start ticking. Judging by the amount of time needed to put the plan on paper, the clock might start ticking around 2020. Of course I haven't factored the global financial meltdown into my calculations.

Seems to me like our alleged betters have looked at the problem and considered it to be that areas of Limerick haven't competed well in the Tidy Towns competition.

They don't seem to have recognised at all, that the problem is a people related problem and not a bloody structural one.

    God help us!
  • Tomás
So the nasty-assed individuals who caused all the terror were only so because they didn't have a viewing tower/marina etc? I had great hopes for this but am very cynical on reading the details.

In relation to Moyross - they talk about integration with existing things like the stadium/LIT. I mean how is that kind of nonsense talk going to alter the scumbag mindset in practical terms?
  • gunner rommel
cattle trucks! thats whats needed! lots of them too.
  • To the point
viewing tower will be a handy drinking spot fot the lads,im not convinced one bit by the regen, putting a lick of paint on something wont fix things, instead use the money to make sure people get educated properly in these estates, pay for their school fee's/books uniforms free transport...etc,u have to change a generation or two of family's to stop the rot, family values need to be changed, and moving people to another are will lead to other area's being run down in years to come and we will need another regeneration fix, there will always be people on social welfare and need the goverments help thats why kids turn to crime the familys cant provide for them so they have to grow up fast and alot turn to drugs and stealing stuff
  • wendylimerick
Any sign of a copy of the report online?
  • Limerick Guy
If you think I am tying a boat at a marina in st marys park....
  • raggedtrousers
did i over hear on Live95 a resident from an area to be "regenerated" demanding a "brand new fitted kitchen" nice priorities. this will all probably go the way of the Public Private Partnership the developer pulled out of in Dublin- as he won't make as great a profit- because of the fiscal slump the plant seems to be in.
  • skinbee
Bling... I think they mean 'quartiers'... its the whole making Limerick look French thing... I think..
  • Joe Walshe
Has the Public and Private funding been agreed?
That would appear to be critical to these projects getting started.
  • tom
the best thing for me is "Moyross to be divided into five estates, each having their own distinctive characteristics." can we have a scumbag ghetto please with 3m walls, electric fence and all that?
  • Bling
my maths are not really the best, but whow can we have 7 quarters. Surely the max is 4 quarters by definition
  • law abider
If we don't sign building regulations into law and inform anyone involved in this project they will be enforced stringently this will be a waste of time and money. This is a chance to rebuild a massive section of this city. We will get one chance. It is an opportunity for the people and the fat cat builders / developers need to be told we are the important ones, not them. It must be done properly.
The capacity of the prison should also be doubled or trebled and the people ruining these areas should be told no more chances.
  • Ger
3000 houses to be built in Southill and 2200 of them being sold on the open market, what a fudging joke. I assume that southill is referring to O'Malley, Keyes and Carew Park. Surely to god there are more then 800 people going to be displaced out of their houses. I wander who these 2200 people who are anxious to buy in Southill.

Also I see they want to knock a perfectly fine church, way to go wasting money again.
