Schools next to feel the budget cuts

Schools are now being forced to institute cutbacks as a result of cuts in the 2009 budget, which was announced earlier this month.

The Limerick Leader reports that one school, Castletroy College, has had to scrap plans for overseas trips for students.

I the budget, there were sweeping cut backs which will result in the increase in class sizes, the withdrawal of substitution cover for non certified sickleave and for teachers away on school business.

Childcare subsidies for working mothers has also been reduced from children up to six years to children under five and a half years.

Meanwhile, a protest at cuts to the universal medical card for the over 70s is scheduled to take place in the city centre today.  The meeting point is the Jesuit Church on O’Connell Avenue at 1400 hrs.

I believe its the same Mr.Wallace Hazel his wife was a teacher also in St.Mary's boy's school. Some country school's out here are set to lose 3 teachers in most schools. Some school's can't afford to heat the class rooms over the winter.Problems in school funding was evident throughout the 'Celtic Tiger' and of course ignored....
The changes in children's allowance i think are limited to those in full time education up to age 16 (before it was 18). This too is going to stir some emotion also a change in disabled children's payments . This was an entilement for disabled children when they reached 16 that too has been changed to age 18 absolutely shamefull.
This budget is saying FU*K the poor , elderly , disabled, children and the rest just carry on as normal. Disgracefull!!!!

Well Fianna Fail have shown their true colours. Hitting the Elderly and the young. They are a disgrace. So much for the minister of defence...defends nothing in the Mid West region along with the boy who came in under his skirt....Peter Power!!

The knock on effect will be severe indeed. One example being that less young people will go on to become teachers and thus the quality of teaching will drop further.

The budget cuts are far from being the full story. Don't forget that (polluted) water charges haven't gone away. Soon prefabs will be seen to be luxuries.

The scum even want to do away with the free books scheme for low income families. I grew up in Moyross and remember how important that scheme was to myself and my poor parents.

There'll be a protest in Dublin this coming Wednesday. It'd be good to see as big a turn out as the medical card and fees cuts demanded last Wednesday. We cannot let our children's futures (further) subsidise the banks and builders too.
