“Tumbleweed on the runway of Shannon next Winter” – O’Leary

Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary has warned of “tumbleweed on the runway of Shannon” next winter due to the introduction of a €10 on every airline ticket.

The airline is now set to enter discussions on it’s future in Shannon.

The new tax, introduced in the budget, applies to all aircraft with 21 or more seats, travelling a distance of 300 km or greater.

The warning comes just days after Ryanair shut it’s base in Valencia, Spain due to disagreements with the local authority there.  The closure of the Spannish base, after just 12 months, affected 70 weekly flights from Valencia.

Is this tax is not due to be implemented until next April?

I would like to hear - depending on events - if the incoming Government parties have stated their position on its removal/non-implementation upon taking over the reins from the circus act currently ruining the country.

Willie has sold out Limerick in order to sit at the Cabinet table.
Power can't believe his luck either, rewarded with a Junior Ministry that gives him more air-miles than international footballers get simply for keeping his mouth firmly shut during the sell-off of Shannon's Heathrow slots by Fianna Fáil.

If National polls are to be believed, 25% of people in this country will still support the FF'ers, so at that WillieO can rely on his sheep to carry him through even in new four seater city constituency. Power on the other hand, might as well start collecting and keeping whatever trinkets come his way from his jaunts into Africa.

Ryanair are nothing if not ruthless as regards extra charges at their bases. They have developed traffic through Shannon to destinations never considered by fat-cats at Aer Lingus. Yet this so-called government want to downgrade Shannon even more by imposing an extra tax on an already unstable aviation sector. The muted silence from our two alleged local representatives says it all about how these two put themselves and their stinking corrupt party ahead of the people of this region.

    all except for the mercenaries

Joh...I have to agree with your statement...It defies logic how they can get 2 seats every time and yet shaft the people of Limerick every time. Willie stood for one thing Barringtons Hospital...since then he has sold his soul for his ministeria position.

We have the government we deserve. FF will get 2 seats every time in Limerick. I can never work it out.

Don't bother mentioning Peter Power. The only reason he is in the Dáil is because of the distribution of Wilie O' Dea's extra votes. When Willie O' Dea loses many of his votes in the next election Peter Power can join the queue he helped create in the dole office. My friend works for Aer Lingus and said the two of them swore blind the Heathrow flight would be saved. He said they were empty promises and he and all his colleagues have sworn to put their votes anywhere but in a Fianna Fáil ballot box at the next possible opportunity.

This tax is another Fianna Fail mess. So much for decentralisation!! What Dublin wants...Dublin gets and to hell with the rest of the country. Not only will Shannon be affected...but so will Cork and Knock. Its time people told Willie O'Dea and Peter Power that they are utterly useless and have sold their souls for their Ministerships....shame on them both. They are disgrace to Limerick. A bloody disgrace.

Would it not make more sense to put that tax on planes with less than 21 seats? At a time they are encouraging car pooling. All they have done is make it more attractive to fly from Dublin.

This is a west of ireland tax.

Most uk flights from Dublin are within the 300k limit
