Channel 4 News apologise for Limerick Ctime figure gaff
Channel 4 News have promised to apologise following a gaff in it’s report on the murder of Shane Geoghegan, where it claimed that there were 16 gangland murders in Limerick in 2008 and that Limerick was the most dangerous city in Europe.
Following communications with the Limerick Co-Ordination office, the makers of the programme, ITN, promised to air the following message in their bulletin.
You may remember that yesterday we reported on the tragic murder of rugby player Shane Geoghegan – killed by a gangster in Limerick, in a case of mistaken identity. It’s profoundly shocked the people and political class of the Irish republic, and focused attention on the persistent organised crime issues the country faces. However, I’m afraid we inadvertently did a disservice to the people of Limerick. We suggested there had been 16 organised crime related murders in the city this year – well there haven’t. That figure is actually an estimate for the entire country, and we’re happy to make that clarification.
The station has also scrubbed any reference of the story from their website.
