Michael Street assault: 1 arrested

Gardai investigating the violent attack on a 21 year old man on Michael Street on Friday evening have arrested an individual in relation to the incident.

The arrest was made in the city centre at around midday today, and the man can be detained for 24 hours.

It is believed that two men in total were involved in the attack, which left the man is intensive care in Cork University Hospital. A second man is now being sought.

A spokesperson for CUH has described the victim’s condition as stable, but serious.

UPDATE: A man has appeared in court charged in relation to this assault.

Michael Kirby (24) with an address of Hyde Road, Prospect, stands accused of assaulting a 21 year old man on Michael Street last Friday evening.  It is alleged that the victim sustained head and body injuries during the attack.  He is now in intensive care at Cork University Hospital.

The court heard today that Kirby was arrested yesterday in Limerick City Centre.  It was also heard that he made no reply when charged.

John Herbert, legal representative for Kirby, told the court that his client would be reserving his position with regard to bail, whereupon Kirby was remanded in custody to appear before the court again on December 2nd.

I was on a trial Jury in Limerick recently and the contempt many others on that panel showed for the Gardai was an eye opener. The whole legal process seems designed for one thing and one thing only - to make lawyers rich. You would not believe the number of them around for a simple traffice accident/ driving under the influence offence. Its a Gravy train that makes the current FAS thing look like chicked feed.

Whats my point..... Not sure anymore :)

Allow juries to know abut previous convictions, allow judges to give stiffer sentences, build more prisons and mostly educate the young. I know I will get slated for this but well educated individuals are far less likely to commit 56 public order offences (Maybe all 56 were not public order but you get my point).

Yes I know educated people can/do commit other crimes like fraud/money laundering etc... but lets deal with the most pressing issues first. In my experience many streets of our lovely city are not safe to walk in the evening. Get those causing this shameful situation off the streets.

"After sentencing, councel for Mr. Kirby made an application for the prison sentence to commence on January 10th, to which Judge O’Neill agreed.

As well as his 20 year ban, 12 month prison sentence, Kirby was fined €150 for other traffic offences."

If he was sentanced to 12 months in jail starting on January, how come he is out and about by late November?
  • BockTheRobber
Yeah. I was painting a house, fitting a kitchen and doing general repairs all at very reasonable prices, and everyone was talking about it there too.
  • Marty
I'm glad some one was arrested. I was stripping for a hen party in the Old Quarter later that night and everone was talking about it. I hope the Gardai track down all the scumbags giving the city a bad name.

This guy has been mentioned on here before:

    http://www.limerickblogger.ie/...

He has at least 56 previous convictions (That was back in 2005).

How many more convictions has he received since?

How is this person allowed to walk the streets of Limerick?

What ever happened to three strikes and you are out?
