Public forum on education cuts at Mary Immaculate

A public forum on the education cuts announced in the budget will be held at Mary Immaculate College on the South Circular Road tonightat 1830 hrs

From the blurb:

A public forum will be taking place in Mary I at 6:30pm tomorrow (Tuesday 4th November) inviting students and staff to come together and discuss how to help fight the education cutbacks which also attack job prospects of students.

After years of study 400 Mary I graduates will, come September, be facing the dole. The sacking of 1,000 teachers as well as the scrapping of the early retirement scheme will mean there will be huge difficulty for any newly qualified teacher, according to the INTO. New restrictions on substitute cover will mean that there won’t even be part-time substitute work available. Students need to organise now to defend their future jobs and help fight the cutbacks.

The 12000 strong protest in Dublin last Wednesday was attended by 10 Mary I students which is a good start to getting organised. Tuesday’s student forum facilitated by Socialist Youth members will be another step in that direction. Students and staff are encouraged to come along and discuss how we can organise on campus to keep up the pressure on the government. Speakers will include a MIC Student as well as Dominic Haugh a substitute teacher and member of ASTI (personal capacity) and a speaker form Mary I Students Union.
