Shane Geoghegan murder: further updates

Up to fifty Garday, as well as the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation are being assigned to the investigation into the murder last Sunday of Shane Geoghegan.  The Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy is quoted on RTE as stating that every resource, including witness protection, will be made availible in the pursuit of Mr Geoghegan’s killers. Link.

Fine Gael are calling for an emergency debate following the murder, and would like the option of internment for criminal gang members looked at..

Yesterday, the Evening Herald newspaper claimed that the man who carried out the killing was from a Dublin criminal gang.  Today’s paper now claims that this man has returned to the capital.  RTE reports that Gardai believe three individuals from the same Limerick based gang are involved in the murder.

Meanwhile, Mr. Geoghegan is being waked at his family home in advance of tomorrow’s funeral at St. Joseph’s Church on O’Connell Street.

There were large queues today at City Hall to sign a book of condolences, while an online book hosted by the Limerick Leader has received over 4,000 messages of sympathy.

A minute’s silence is also to be held prior to the Munster match with the All-Blacks next week.

UPDATE: As mentioned by Hoof in the comments, a minute’s silence will be held at the Ireland v New Zealand match this weekend in Croke Park for Shane Geoghegan.

Also, A two minute silent demonstration will be held in the plaza at the University of Limerick at 1400 hrs today.

(including all known relatives guilty or not)

what exactly are you saying? just because people tell you this is what happened you want them and all relatives to be locked up guilty or not? sounds like rendition to me and on that point you cannot be serious.

what if a person getting headlines about these trouble was a relative to you or your extended family? whould the shoe still fit in that case?

@ Z, what have the governmnet done this time that they haven't done before, they have done nothing, if they were serious about these gangs they would get them off the streets and close down their empires, so they raided a few houses, big deal, they should be doing they every week, they have done nothing that they have not done before and it didnt work either, it will all die down in a few weeks time and tackling these gangs will be forgotten about

sadly, Shane Geoghegan wasn't the first innocent person to die from this gang war. The government never acted properly on Brain Fitzgearld's tragic murder and many other innocent people. At least something is being done now but maybe Shane could be hear today, if we had longer prison sentences, more gardai on patrol, and anyone who is invloved in a gang should be jailed. also we need examine the social problems of why there is so many drug users? Without them there would be no market for the gangs. More community action is needed and maybe our government will follow. I'm proud of Limerick for the reaction it had to Shane's brutish murder. Did I miss what was government action was taken after Anthony Campbell's untimely death ? I heard also that socila welfare is having problems, and people may be without money until christmas, this will levae people in need desperate. Our government should see this and take action, this could save lives, by rescusing people from getting involved in drugs.

    Hi All,

I am concerned that nothing will come of this and in 6 weeks time we will come out of this no different than we went into this terrible time.

    1. We are all afraid to come out and say anything in public (myself included) for fear of the ramifications.
    2. The politicians are giving us no leadership. Willie had talked for years and years but can anyone please tell me what has he ever delivered to my city?
    3. Unless all of the Gang (Dundee/Macca) are rounded up and put away for a long time (including all known relatives guilty or not) this will continue.

So, I ask you all; what are we going to do about it???? I don't know. Please help me out here...

    Hello all
Further to the silent protest which happened at UL today, various news stations have been on to me to know if the bigger event is happening in Limerick at the weekend.
Can anyone tell me if something definite has been organised?
Don't wish to give misleading information on air.
Newstalk 106 are due to call me at 7 am tomorrow (Thursday) to know if it's happening.

I would very much appreciate if someone would let me know.
    Thanks
    Ellen
  • I live in Limerick. So does my dog. Neither he nor I know who pulled the trigger on the gun that ended Shane's life. Are we thick, or are ye all talkin' out through your arses? By the way, i-n-c-o-m-p-e-t-e-n-t is the correct spelling of the word. Oh, the irony.

    Well said Hoof,

The old gang are definately closing ranks.

It needs to be said out loud "WE HAVE AN INCOMPADENT POLICE FORCE".

It 24 hours after the murder that they eventually got round to raiding houses. Talk about keystone cops.

Within an hour of the murder they should have started calling in off duty Gardai, dragged Gardai in from Ennis, Tipp or where ever and started raiding houses etc.

As far as I am concerned the Gardai, local politicans & bishops are part of the lazy Limerick establishment which has allowed the city go down hill.See how they are closing ranks with their weasel words.

Where does Fachtna Murphy get off with such a generalization. Implying that the people of Limerick are in essence "harbouring" the killers and it's up to ordinary people to turn them in.

I fear he is already getting his excuse in early and I notice a lot of media have now begun to repeat the mantra., as have FF spokespeople. So too the Catholic Bishop of Limerick. The old gang closing ranks again when the pressure comes on.

Fachtna, if you have any Intelligence Section operating in Limerick, maybe they can tell you who's behind this murder. If not, my dog will whisper their names in your ear. Or if you can't make it down, just stop any 7 year old child on the streets of this city and ask 'whodunit'.

Coming from a force whose Roxboro Superintendent only last year praised a notorious criminal family from Clonlong - allied through blood and trade to the Dundons -as 'decent and respectable people', shows just how truly out of touch they are.

ffs. Do your job for once, and stop blaming the people you are entrusted to protect!

Some fantastic insights on the Bock the Robber website into the current situation.

He articulates my views much better than I could possibly hope to express them myself.

On the subject of Shane Geoghegan murder

    http://bocktherobber.com/2008/...

On the the subject of the HSE housing policy which is spreading scumbags around the city

    http://bocktherobber.com/2008/...

And finally, on how the scumbags are allowed get away with it.

These articles are right on the money as far as I am concerned.

Just to update on the marks of respect, Squid.

A minutes silence (or applause as sometimes occurs at sporting tributes) for Shane will also be observed during the Ireland v. New Zealand game on Saturday.
