[Updated]Asylum seekers hostel row leaves one dead

Two foreign nationals are recovering from knife injuries after a row broke out at the former Sarsfield Bridge Hotel, now a hostel for asylum seekers.

Gardai were called to the scene after the altercation shortly after mid day and both men were taken to the Mid-Western regional hospital with stomoch injuries. These injuries have been described as serious but not life threatening.

It is hoped that they can be questioned after they receive medical attention.

A source quoted in the Limerick Leader says that it is not believed anyone other than the two injured individuals were involved in the altercation.

I think "Asylum Seekers for Idiots" would be more Hatzels cup of tea!

hazel a Dr Bryan Fanning from UCD has written on "Immigration and social change in the republic of ireland" published by manchester press.
but i think paul cullens book "refugees and asylum seekers in ireland" is pretty comprehensive, that can be bought on amazone.com for ten dollars plus shipping.
i do know that some people take advantage of the social welfare system, and that would include the home grown irish themselves, but an interesting statistic is that the social welfare payments to asylum seekers has not risen in 8 years, and is the only sw payment not to do this.
i respect your willingness to investigate further, because its a fine line between prejudice and opinion, but good luck and if i come across anything else i will let you know
  • hazel
well norma despite what you have said i still have my opioions but do you know how i can optain any info on assylum seekeres and how and why they are here
i did look at a few web sites but nothing much

hazel you have recieved a right bolliking for your comments and i think deservedly so, but i do regret stooping to sarcasm devoid of humour.
however, we inhabit a global universe, however we dealt with our opinions in the past, the fact that we are now a well travelled multi national nation calls for a revision of those views, i am very grateful that i grew up in a liberal household, where most subjects were up for vigorous debate and prejudices were not given room to grow, that is not to say i don't have to be aware of what insidious thoughts might creep in that i must be aware of and deal with, it's important for our survival and growth to ask questions and carry out our own independent search for the truth, and this i convey in all sincerity.

norma im quite aware if where i can obtain books i love your sarcasim

starkie. i forgot many happy returns !
  • norma st leger
    starkie. thank you
hazel. if sainhood to you means taking a measured and educated response to what is happening around me ? if it is to eschew bigoted, judgemental and racist views, then you may have a point, except i do not qualify as i am not a member of the catholic regime, to which i have heard, one must subscribe for sainthood......apologies in advance if i have used too many big words for you, but there are now these amazing little things called "books" on many and varied topics, which i highly recommend to you, they can be found in libraries and shops, try google.

I have happy memories of the Sarsfield Bridge Hotel. This type of thing is very sad.

starkie. i meant absolutly nothing other than "a thought being spared" for all the violence and pain in the world at this time.
i too have my thoughts and opinions on middle east, i in no way was trying to divert from the subject of ill concealed racism on said topic, my apologies to you if what i wrote was not clear, it simply was on my mind, and i meant absolutly nothing at all other that "the thought" but i thank you for asking me and not making a judgement.

Hazel...................you are an unreconstructed bigot. Something tragic happens and you use it as an excuse to express your racist views.
  • srarkie
norma st, ledger. Idont get your point when you said to me at the end of your blog, spare a thought for the 198 palestinians killed yesterday. I am shocked and saddenned by all violence anywhere it happems. I was talking about one tragedy the result of whick i wtnessed yesterday and I dont think we should be comparing this bitter longstanding complicated war with yesterdays incident. I have my views on the israeli palestinian conflict but I dont think this is the time to express them. if I took you up wrong I apologise.
  • The Maker
Also spare a thought for the Israeli people who are bombed everyday by Hamas.
  • norma st leger
we are living in very tragic times, all violent deaths which cut young lives short are painful.
whatever facts are revealed regarding this case, we can never fully understand the experiences which may have led to the events.
i don't see the need to pass any judgements, there are enough people out there in their glasshouses willing to throw the stones.
hazel, you may be entitled to your "opinion" but what is in question is what your opinion is based on ?? is it based on experience/education/facts/....exploration of "the other side of the world"
starkie. that is a harsh experience seeing somebody so seriously and violently injured, the reality of visual impact can be very hard to forget, spare a thought for the 198 palestinians killed to-day
  • hazel
    right il say no more
    yes it is tragic
im entitled to my opinion and yes we agree to differ ok
  • starkie
we dont know yet the facts of this case. all I know is that when i saw this guy being taken away in a stretcher i felt terrible. its not nice to see a guy in this state, he looked to me to be very seriously injured. I think the other guy Was stabbed also but i think he was already in the ambulance. their nationality meant nothing to me. i just saw a human being a very young guy very seriously injured, lets wait and hear the full story before we pass judgements.. given the time of year it casts a dark cloud over limerk which we can do withouth.
  • Largeladd
The poor boy what else can you say it's tragic
  • norma st leger
"they can't behave themselves" , i'm glad you did'nt say any more than that hazel.
who are "they" as the report stated, "they" were of african origin......
but of course are'nt we used to "they" meaning the natives whose murdering sub human drug dealing have terrorised our city, who for generations have recieved a lot more than "bed and board"
hazel, i found your comments as sad and tragic as what happened, i pray you are not representative of limerick.
  • Squid
Please point out where it says all assylum seekers can't behave themselves.
  • 17 and 19 year olds god help them! I am sure neither of them thought this is where they would end up .One life gone one ruined.Very sad really.
  • hazel
well its detailed on the blogger who they are
presumably assylum seekeres usualy from the other side of the world
  • Squid
    Who exactly are they?
  • hazel
see they cant even behave themselves after being given bed and board
there is a lot more id like to say on this blog but feel i have to keep my comments to myself because i may get barred but you can all imagine just what id like to say
  • starkie
