At least 65 more job cuts announced

At least 65 people are set to lose their jobs as two employers make cuts.

At least 35 jobs are to go at Limerick County Council following last year’s announcement that funding from central government is to be cut.  The number of cuts could increase if Limerick County Council decides to cut any of it’s services to stay within their budget.

It has also been announced that Rehab Logistics, who carry out electronics and mechanical assembly contract work in the Raheen Industrial Estate, are seeking 30 lay offs in the coming months.

The company employs 90 people, half of which are people with disabilities.

The company also has facilities in Navan and Mountmelick

Government has a tendency to get bigger when times are good. It gets fat & slow. The same thing happens in private enterprise. In private enterprise, when times get tough, due to the lack of unions & job protection jobs get shed. It's sometimes called 'creative destruction'. It is a hallmark of private enterprise in the capitalist system. Government has no such thing. It gets fat & stays fat. I'm surprised that these cuts are happening but the bottom line is that Government needs to get lean now that times are tough. It can't just be private enterprise feeling the pain.

The Tradesmen who were making the big bucks during the boom will have to deal with lower incomes or no income now that the boom has turned to bust. There is no-one holding their hands or guaranteeing them jobs.

I don't pay any TV license because I am not a resident of Ireland. If I was, I'd be getting free TV anyway as I would probably be locked up by now.

Bertie & Burke were thieves. The Irish people voted them in.

The banks are thieves. I wouldn't give them a cent. Let them sink & if there is any wrongdoing proved, lock their chief executives up.

Agree about the corruption in Ireland. It has always been & will always be a corrupt place. The PAYE man or woman has always been screwed & always will be.

    @ William Bell

There are overpaid people in Dell, De Beers, Waterford Crystal - people who have been sitting on their arses getting pay increases for years and doing less and less. Did you think it was right over the last ten years that tradesmen were taking home €1500 a week after tax? The people who lose their jobs in The County Council will be low paid workers. You read the papers and soak in the shite written in it dividing the public from the private sector. There are two types of people in this country - the haves and the have nots. They exist in both sectors and don't care about those below them. Your TV licence is helping pay Pat "The Plank" Kenny €850,000 a year and he spent last week demanding that public sector pay is slashed.

There are gas deposits off our coast that could get this country on its feet but Bertie Ahern and Ray Burke gave it away to the Norwegian people. Norway has billions of euro set aside from it's gas exploration, we gave it all away and now have a huge bill to protect it for them. The government is preparing to give the banks 8 billion euro and we're wondering how we can save money?

Have a good look at where the money is in this country and the corruption and give the people who will really pay the price in this recession a chance - the low paid - be they in the private or public sector.

    @ William bell...
The government could do that, but would you be willing to wait 3 times as long for your planning permission, have 2 thirds less people administrating housing queues, have 3 times as many people queueing in the motor tax office, go without water facilities or have sewage back up into your house because the crew are in Ennis and they still have to solve problems in Abbeyfeale before they can get back into the city to sort out the issues there? Its true that there are some time wasters in local government positions, just like there are in the private sector, but not the majority..
maybe some of the higher level jobs could be amalgamated, and having one authority makes sense in some respects, but for the most part, the same amount of lower level administration and outdoor staff would still be required to get the work done.

I'd say you're on a lot more than a roll William!
  • Hi guys,

Have you seen the Maxim magazine of January? The UK edition has a report about the gangs in Limerick

@UFO i seen them too havent a clue what they were

That seems to be the problem with the government for some unknown reason the people that are running this country are running it into the ground by not taking the steps required to combat whats going on.
Seriously most people have a brain thats connected to their spine....so use it and actually lead instead of wafting around like an unwanted smell.

OK. Firstly I will admit I know F*&* all about how Limerick County Council operates & how or why it is different from Limerick City Council. I will begin with a question. Are there any functions within Limerick County Council that are a duplicate of Limerick City Council? Yeah. . . . ? Lets say that Limerick City & Limerick County were merged, how many roles/positions/jobs could be shed? Yeah. . . ? OK. We're on a roll now. I never knew of such a thing as Clare County Council until I just did a Google search. IT EXISTS. So, lets imagine, merge Clare County Council, Limerick City Council & Limerick County Council. How much money could you save?
Look, the bottom line here is that there are hundreds, if not thousands of people working in the councils that do no more than warm seats between 9 and 4.30, 5 days a week.
If Ireland really wants to become competitive the state sector should take the lead, namely by fuc*&*g all these people out on the road to find proper jobs.
Ireland is in danger of an International Credit Rating Downgrade. It is time to get the states finances in order. It will be a lot cheaper to have all these monkeys on the dole than having them sending pointless e-mails & having tea parties all day at the productive sectors expense. Cmon Ireland. Have the guts to do what is needed before we are the laughing stock of the world.

I see on the news the unrest over job loses is spreading all over the EU. In the UK British workers are out on protest over non-nationals coming in to do jobs that they could do. This of course was going to happen when people feel they are losing out to non-nationals over jobs. And mark my word well people it will happen here as more people lose their jobs and see non-nationals in jobs here that Irish people could have. We now face a very series situation over the next few months where unrest could spread to all parts of the country over job losses. Already Waterford crystal workers are being locked out of their jobs, De Beers’s staff were escorted from the building on Friday after been made redundant. There is going to be a lot of angry people out there and when push comes to shove, things will happen that we thought would never happen. And for all the wrong reasons.

Keep up the good work Fianna Fail....and just kick us while we are down. This is disgraceful. Rehab does great work and provides many jobs for people with disabilities. Another Bloody Disgrace!
