History will remember Ger McDonnell, even if Limerick's good old boys could not on the night, and I am a rugby fan. I can say, personally, that Ger was a gentleman, and if he was still alive he would take it all with a pinch of salt, such was the spirit of the man. He did not seek fame for his achievements, as he was very unassuming. But I am still very surprised by the result as he's courageous, completely selfless acts on K2 would made him an excellent example to young people to look up to, in a city craving the need for such role models as Ger. How can you nominate a man who risked his life, died in the process, and not give the recognition?

Fair play to pat on his award - but the timing was out a bit. Thomond Park didnt make Limerick, Limerick makes Thomond Park. I have great respect for all nominees but for me Gerard McDonnell shows the true spirit of Limerick. For the first limerickman to climb Everest and the first Irishman the summit K2. (K2 when you summit that its like the olympic gold of mountain climbing)
We had a great man in our grasp a legend adventurer and a true hero sadly for his own city and county not to recognise him must be pretty sad, he wont be getting a chance again like so many others.
  • A Joke
My heart goes out to the poor mc donnell family have lost a son and brother who will forever be the first Irish man on K2 and now he will forever remain there. He has made history and now his own County don't even recognise his heroic act freeing three climbers who were hanging there to die at least they died with hope in their hearts after Gerard freed them they were struck by an avalanche.
One person helping others giving them the best hope of life, A team building Thomond Park (which could have received another award this year) Gerard will never again be nominated. He made Limerick known to the world, now Limerick doesn't want to give him the credit he deserves.

Pat Whelan always comes across to me as an ignorant builder type. But the new Thomond Park is probably one of the best things to ever happen in Limerick. And he got it built on time and in budget. He’d get my vote.

    Who selected this shortlist ?

With all the information that has come out since the K2 disaster I think that Ger McDonnell should get this hands down. His heroic actions on the mountain should be honoured -

Best of ExplorersWeb 2008 Award Winner: K2, Gerard McDonnell
After much effort, this is finally being reported in the media.
What Gerard did to help other climbers in distress at 8000m is most amazing and unmatched in 8000m climbing. No surprise to those of us who know him.

Notwithstanding the integrity or worthiness of any of these nominees, posthumously, this award should go to one man and indeed to his family, Gerard McDonnell, Mountaineer, First Irishman to climb K2.

Why was Tom Shortt not on the list ?Surely should have been nominated.
  • john wayne
Thomond Park is a credit to Whealan. I am told it would not have happened without him.

how was this list of people compiled? only heard of the K2 man after his tragic disaster, and Dolan is from the entertainmentcan venue. I think of many Limerick citizens not here. these awards are silly.

apsolutly, what he ended up giving attempting to save lives makes the majority of the choices seem trivial
  • Sean Sabhat
I am sure every person on this list whole heartedly deserves to nominated but my vote is split between Sophie Lillingston and Gerard McDonnell.
