Members of Sinn Féin at their Sean South Commemoration last weekend.. Those in attendance included the party's European Election candidate Toireasa Ferris, and Limerick City Council election candidate Maurice Quinlivan.

The first week in January is the time of year when Limerick’s republican fraternity commemorate Sean South.

Sinn Fein held their procession from Bedford Row to South’s grave at Mount St. Lawrences cemetary lead by the Carrick-on-Suir Republican Flute Band.

Tom Collopy, Sinn Fein’s Limerick City East election candidate in the local election, was the charman of the memorial ceremony.  A minutes silence was held by the gathering after Marie Quinlivan laid a wreath on the grave.

European Election candidate Toireasa Ferris was the main orator at the ceremony.

“Sean Sabhat was a true patriot who died that we might have had a free and united Ireland. Along with Fergal O’Hanlon they both died 52 years ago in the age-old struggle for Irish Freedom. The lives and deaths of these two men from almost opposite ends of the country also demonstrates clearly that the Republican struggle for a united, free and independent Ireland is very clearly an all Ireland struggle. It is not, as some would have us believe, just something that only concerns the Six Counties.

She also criticised the Government over ongoing health cuts during the oration.

Meanwhile, Republican Sinn Fein also held their ceremony during the weekend.

Tomas O’Curraoin was the main speaker at this ceremony and was chaired by Des Long.

In response to " LimerickScot`s " comments regarding sean south being a
"murderous thug", i assume therefore that he also considers Wolfe Tone ,
Robert Emett, Patrick Sarsfield, Michael Collins etc to be murderous thugs.
Did all the above ( and thousands more besides ) not fight in the name of
freedom for Ireland from the scurge of British greed and oppression. Or
does Mr. "LimerickScot" suggest that we should have just accepted our
meagre lot rather than fight for our rights....To quote Michael Collins---
" war is murder, sheer bloody murder"... and we never wanted war- just
    peace and freedom !!!!

I knew the man who wrote the song, a limerick man himself, from janesboro i think
  • Clarina
Fair enough, wasn't really giving out but thanks for your reply.
  • Squid
Imple really, the first provided more information on their ceremony than the second.
  • Clarina
A little late reply but found it that odd that even when one group pulls less than 40 attendees and in doing so get the bulk of the story while the other group who pulled just over 200 get a mere mention at the end of the story.

    garden Says:

“Its high time that some of the lazy time servers are cleared out of the council ”

Interesting choice of words.Pat do you think you should go back and rephrase that!

Sure Garden, I'd be happy to rephrase my comments above as follows....Its high time that the people of Limerick voted out the current crop of lazy, ignorent city councillors and instead voted in people who actually want to work for their community!

The fact of the matter is there would be no free state in the north or the south of ireland if it was not for the actions of the people of ireland who formed the irish republican army and sinn fein(im not talking about the scumbags who are around now) who ARE concerned about the living, and in FACT DEFENDED THE VERY RIGHTS OF THE LIVING BOTH IN THE NORTH AND THE SOUTH OF IRELAND.

    Is mise le meas,

if you can figure out what that means ... lol

I have always been baffled as to why peole made a hero of a man who set out to kill people when the same people condemn the other more recent IRA.

ok, so undying fame surrounds his name.
because he bollexed up a mission in Non-iron.
and his mission was to go and kill people who were pretty much doing a paid job of work and probably happened to believe something different from him.
In my opinion there's too much romance attached to tales like this

there's nothing remotely heroic about setting off on a mission, intending to ambush men who were sons, fathers husbands. Nothng herioc at all, unless i am missing something.

to be clear, i am of irish descent, i have my life in limerick and i love the city, i'm a catholic, and i beleive ireland should be 1 country polictically, geographically and in every other context. but commemorating someone who in any other city in any other society would just be termed as a murderous thug - i cant see the benefit.

the earlier comments are spot on re SF - too much living in the past, quoting and dancing round decades of activity, that hasnt really brought about the required result.

"Maurice Quinlivan does great non paid work in Limerick as a community activist, which is more than can be said for some of our elected councillors"

    Well said ENF.

Its high time that some of the lazy time servers are cleared out of the council to make way for genuine community activists like Mr Quinlivan.
  • ENF
Sinn Fein imo have come along way since the 'past' Maurice Quinlivan does great non paid work in Limerick as a community activist, which is more than can be said for some of our elected councillors

Who cares. Sinn Fein won't become a serious political presence on this island until they restructure their message to appear more concerned about the next 80 years than the last 80. The dead don't vote but Sinn Fein seems to spend more effort pleasing the dead than the living.

My old mother grew up with the man and I remember her bewilderment at the song. But sure, she used to say, we always called him Jack, not Seán, and anyway he wasn't from Garryowen.
