it was a unforturnate case of mistaken identity he was not the intended target but we should remember he is not the only victom of this feud and the cause of this feud needs to be addressed if we want a better limerick
  • Pat
    @Mikey

"the cause of this feud needs to be addressed"...... how do you mean Mikey.

Should we perhaps help these gangs make an arrangement as to how they organise the drug trade? Because that is what the so called fued is about.

To Darren and Londonlod: The march was cancelled as requested by the family (who were along with me and other close friends at the game because to be there for the minutes silence this was very important to us the game wasn't) it was organised by well meaning people that may have got a bit carried away with themselves in there attempt to send a message that Limerick is sick of ignorant c**ts thinking they run our city hinding behind guns and intimidation these people are f**king cowards..as someone who was known Shane all most of my life I do find your post offensive and ill informed while people like me are struggling to get on with our lives you feel this need to seek justice for people who quite frankly don't deserve it..Shane wasn't famous but HE WAS a great friend of mine and HE WAS completely innocent (i'd also like to thank others for pointing this incorrect post out) I do also respect your right to have your opinions heard but let me make this clear to you if i ever hear you speaking them in public I will hurt you

    Thanks

Darren - no need to be so inconsiderate ..... Would all the hype be more deserved if he did play for Ireland ?? At the end of the day he was a really nice guy who was cruelly murdered and has left destroyed lives behind him. It doesnt matter if he was on a schoolboys team or played for Munster.
The reason there is so much hype is because he was an honest, good natured person who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Of course he wasnt the only innocent person killed this year but its the way he was killed that causes so much outrage.
People are shocked and disgusted and cannot forget about it. While there is still public interest the papers will write about it, interest = sales.
I dont understand people like you who have to throw in some horrible comment - why do you care if people are still talking about it ? Maybe his case has go more attention than others but surely one solved murder is better than none ?
Does it ever cross your mind Shanes family might read your comments ? It may be just an oppinion to you but think about what you say. You are speaking about someone who was loved by others and then taken away from them and you seem to imply that because he was not a professional rugby player, we should all have forgotten about it long ago.
    Get a life.

the media should not be allowed print photos of garda and all so the garda on special operatiosn should wear head masks like the police in many other countries

I agree that these criminals need to have a big sentence so that once they go into prison the only way they come out is in a box. That is the only way to deter them. One Strike and your out.

    Rest in peace Shane,

The story as it appears on BreakingNews.ie. Notice that apparently there were 16 people killed last year in a feud in Limerick? I wasn't aware of this, was anyone else?

A 23-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Garryowen rugby player Shane Geoghegan.

Barry Doyle, originally from Portland Row in Dublin, but with an address at Hyde Road in Limerick, has been charged at a special sitting of Limerick District Court this afternoon.

Geoghegan was killed close to his home in Dooradoyle in Limerick on November 9, 2008.

He was shot nine times with a Glock semi-automatic pistol when he tried to run from his killer hours after watching Ireland beat Canada in his native city.

He was hit three times in the upper body and once in the head, apparently the victim of mistaken identity in a city gripped by a bitter turf war between rival crime families.

Sixteen people died last year in violence related to a feud involving three rival Limerick families.

Fifteen people have been arrested for questioning about the Geoghegan murder and seven remain in custody.

I reckon this guy is all done. There was so much heat on the gangs that this guy was given up quite easily.

He may have allegedly committed the act but remember he are much bigger fish to fry here. These people are responsible for organising the incident. Lets hope that a couple of the others get put away for a long time.
  • Limkguy
I wonder if he's any relation to Patrick Doyle, also from Portland Row, shot dead in Spain just over a year ago?Oddly enough, he was a professional hitman - http://costasdelsol.blogspot.com/2008/02/profes...
The Herald made also made the connection - http://www.herald.ie/national-news/hitman-quizz...
