Former Mayor of Limerick, Clemment Casey, dies age 87
Clemment Casey, who was Mayor of Limerick City from 1980-1981 has died. He was 87 years old.
Born in 1922, Clemment, better known as Clem, was the oldest living former Mayor of the city. He grew up on Roches Street and received his education at CBS on Sexton Street and the Good Councel College in New Ross.
A lifelong businessman, Mr. Casey ran a poultry and fish store on Roches Street.
He was first elected to Limerick City Council as a Fianna Fail councillor from 1967 until 1984, becoming Mayor in 1981. He also served on the Harbour Commission, becoming Chairman in the mid 1990s.
Outside of politics, Clem Casey was heavily involved in Young Monsters Rugby Football Club. both as a player and member. In 1955 he was elected president of the club, a position he would hold for the next three years.
During this time, he spearheaded the purchase of the clubs current grounds at Rosbrein, bringing an end to the club’s nomadic existence.
In 1969 he became president of the Munster Branch of the IRFU. His interest in both sporting and political life in Limerick continued long after he left Limerick City Council.
Mr. Casey died in the early hours of this morning.
His remains will repose at Thompson’s Funeral Home on Sunday before removal to St. Joseph’s Church, O’Connell Avenue at 1800 hrs.
Burial will take place at Mount Saint Lawrence Cemetary following funeral Mass at St. Josephs at 1030 hrs
