Anphetamines with an estimated value of €115,000 and heroin with an estimated value of €130,000 were seized by Gardai on Monday night during a planned search of a house in Rathbane.
The search occurred approximately 1930 hrs at a house in Elm Park.
One person, a teenager, was arrested in connection with the seizure.
I cannot understand a company who have just let people go who will not confirm anything. Its fucking crazy really. Its unique in the annals of industrial history.
In an interview with the Limerick Leader, Mayor John Gilligan didn’t hold back when stating his belief that Dell will soon be gone altogether from Limerick.
We have to accept Dell are on their way out of here. The Government are going to have to recognise the enormity of this situation. I had calls from people coming out from the meeting and they were in tears..
His comments come as it was revealed that a 30 day review of it’s research and development department, which employs 1,100 people, as well as last weeks news that as many as 300 people are to be made redundant on top of the 1,900 redundancies announced in January.
And tomorrows Irish Examiner will do little to cool the Mayor’s temper. It would seem that the Government were aware of the enormity of the situation in the Mid West, but decided not to share it with the rest of us.
A confidential report produced by Forfás predicted as many as 9,500 job losses as a result of the closure of Dell. And here’s the kicker.
Ironically, a working group established last January to prepare the announcement of the Dell closure — which included company representatives as well as senior officials from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment and a number of state bodies, including Forfás — criticised media reports which suggested up to 10,000 jobs could be lost directly and indirectly in the region.
I spent three days in Limerick. People said I was crazy, but I loved that town – Keifer Sutherland.
Gleaned from a recent interview with Movies.ie. Also discussed in the interview are his roles in both 24 and his upcoming release, Monsters versus Aliens.
Members of SIPTU at Shannon will be participating in the nationwide “Day of Action” planned for Monday, March 30th.
They will be joining other public sector workers in a day long work stoppage in protest at the Government’s handling of the economic crisis.
On Friday, staff at Limerick County Council voted to participate in the strike.
However, ICTU, the representative body for the trade union movement in Ireland, have been dealt a setback as the largest public sector union IMPACT, failed to ratify the action.
Under IMPACT rules, a majority of 66 percent is required before the union can sanction strike action. The vote only received 65 percent support.
Officials at IMPACT are meeting to see if they can give discretionary approval to the participation of the union in the strike.

Andy Lee had a points victory at the O2 in Dublin tonight on the undercard to the Bernard Dunne fight. It was the Castleconell’s man first time in the ring since last July and he looked ring rusty. A cut in the first round didnt help either but after flooring his opponent in the sixth round Andy was comfortable enough and won comfortably on points at the end of the ten round fight.
It looks like a lot of Munster people now class the Millenium stadium in Cardiff as a second home. Today many of them changed the colour of the jersey from red to green as the International team just about pulled out a victory at the death thanks to Munster man Ronan O’ Gara slotting over a drop goal with two minutes to go to send a third of the stadium and the thousands watching at home into dream land. Many of the red men of Munster of course were on the team and it was a nice touch to see assistant team captain Paul O’ Connell pick up the triple crown trophy before the big prize of the Championship and Grand slam was picked up by Brian O’Driscoll. The BOD has in fairness had a good season but all of that will be put to one side when Leinster come to Thomond Park in a few weeks for a Magners league game. Nice touch of RTE to have footage from Young Munsters club house as well and in a moment akin to the aftermath of Dave O’Learys penalty shoot out winner in Genoa and the panel afterwards it was funny to see the Rugby boys looking suitably silly with their hats on, with George Hook sporting a fine green pony tail. Feck the recession for a day or two and congrats to Ireland on the grand slam!!
In basketball news, the Limerick Lions bowed out of the league with a defeat at the hands of UCD Marian on a scoreline of 71-61. If you want to see highlights log on to www.basketballireland.ie
In soccer news, Limerick FC have had two home games in recent times and announced that local paper, the Limerick Independent are their title sponsors taking over from 95fm. Some other people to come on board as associate sponsors are the Strand Hotel, Spin south west, Yanjing beer and Autoexchange. Mervue utd from Galway were the first visitors to Jackman Pakr this year and the league newcomers left with their tail between their legs on the back of a 4-1 defeat. Athlone town came to visit last night and in a disappointing game the result was a scoreless draw. After three games the super blues have won one, lost one and drawn one.
David Quaid, who spoke at the BizCamp conference at the Kemmy School of Business about Search Engine Management.
Some of the sharpest brains in business gathered today at the University of Limerick to share their insights into entrepeneurship.
Numerous talks were held at the Kemmy School of business
Two discussions which I attended were by David Quaid (pictured) who talked about Search Engine Management, basically how to make the likes of Google work for you.
Another by Anton Mannering, discussed the importance of networking in business, that is, introducing yourself to other people who may further the growth of your business and develop opportunities.
Networking with others was the main point being driven home on the day. The event literature stated that the most important part of BizCamp happened outside the lecture theatres and in the lobby and corridors.
Before the end of the day, a discussion was held in the main theatre entitled “What Next?”
The session, moderated by Stephen Kinsella, and a panel including the man behind the Greenhouse Business Incubator Evert Bopp and Pat Phelan of Cube Telecom, took questions from the audience on the state of the telecommunications infrastructure in Ireland, the merits of state agencies such as Enterprise Ireland, and the best way to secure investors for new business.
There will be video of a portion of this session uploaded later
