Caption competition

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Deirdre de Burca, Dublin MEP and Ireland South European Candidate Dan Boyle posed for a pre-Heineken Cup photograph, and to be honest, I don’t really know what to say. So, I will leave it to you

And as the Greens are likely to support the whole blasphemy laws being proposed, try not to make the Baby Jebus cry with your captions.

Happy Let’s burn shit day!

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Today is the day when the ancient tradition of illegally dumping rubbish in green areas of the city and setting fire to it occurrs.

Throughout the city, kids of all ages will gather old furniture, discarded wood, shopping tolleys and a whole host of other items in a competition to build the biggest pile of burning garbage in the city.

If you are from a city other than Limerick that does this on April 30th, let us know as I personally have never seen it.

Also, if you want to send your photos of your burning heap, feel free to do so at editors@limerickblogger.org, and we shall publish them over the weekend.

Have fun everyone.

Political briefs

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Ok then, there is some catching up to do so here goes. This will be the first of a number of catch-up articles.

Firstly, a table quiz which was being organised to raise funds for Joe Higgins’ European Election campaign has been postponed until May 14th. Further details on this are pending, so as soon as we know, you’ll know.

The Green Party candidate in the Castleconnel Area, Trish Brennan is calling for the County Council to get moving with the provision of “grow your own” allotments. She believes that Limerick City and County Councils are falling behind the likes of Dublin, Galway, Cork, and Kilkenny when it comes to the provision of these allotments. According to Ms Brennan, growing your own vegetables both brings communities together and helps save money.

Limerick RSF website inaccessible to the disabled

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Republican Sinn Féin have broken one of the most obvious rules when it comes to making information accessible to the disabled online.

Large chunks of text on the website, including what might be important information on the party’s political objectives, and election manifesto, are in JPEG format rather than text. Screenreaders used by the visually impaired, for example, are unable to read JPEG files.

Even if they could, any speech software would be drowned out by the background music on their election campaign page.

The use of JPEGs rather than text also slows down page loading, and eats into the download allowance of people on lower cost internet products. It also takes much longer for those viewing the site on dial-up connections longer to view the pages.

Michael Dwyer’s remains arrive in Ireland

Friday, April 24th, 2009

The remains of a 24 year old Tipperary man shot dead in Bolivia last week have arrived in Ireland.

Michael Dwyer, from Ballinderry in County Tipperary, was shot dead during a pre-dawn raid by elite police forces in a hotel in the city of Santa Cruz last Thursday.

At the time, Bolivian authorities claimed that he was a member of a terrorist cell whose goal was ultimately, to kill the president of the country, Evo Morales.

Some doubts have however emerged as to the validity of the claims, and there have been persistent calls, both from Bolivian opposition politicians, and the governments of a number of countries, including Ireland, for an international investigation into the raid.

Today, Mr. Dwyers remains were handed over to the Dublin county coroner, and a pathologist is due to carry out an examination.
