I thought everybody knew about the feast of Bealtaine, and it's certainly not just celebrated in Limerick. It is known by many different names in many different parts of the world. The fires I think were meant to burn away evil spirits. It is known in parts of Europe as Walpurgis Night. In Edinburgh, the Beltane Fire festival is held on a hill near the city.

Where I grew up in Janesboro there was always a bonfire on 'May Eve', it was always well controlled and lots of fun, we kids got to roast some marshmallows and the later the adults would sit around and have a drink of whatever their favourite tipple was. It had a great sense of community.

I'm not sure when it became a nuisance but by the sounds of things it might have.

Pat, the Skangers are probably the only people left who still buy the “Leader”….now hitting yet another new low for it's in-depth celebration of rubbish burning coverage.

It's surprising they didn't incorporate this into their Riverfest piece.

Nice to see the next generation already looking the part, yer man with can of Dutch Gold and the little 'gansta' poses capturing the essence of the evening. So how many more nights of black noxious fumes have we to look forward to….4? 5?

We had a great fire last night. Just wood and no plastic. Plenty on toasted marsh mellows and good crack. Always a great time of year and a great Druid tradition. In olden days they lit fires on the hills to welcome in the summer and still do in many places around the country. Long may it last.
