Shop Local Limerick didn’t shop local for web hosting.

ShopLocal Limerick is a free “door-to-door” magazine containing mostly advertisement. They also have a website, shoplocallimerick.ie, which also carries adverts

But the good people who encourage us to shop local, failed to do so when seeking out a web host. In fact, they didn’t even shop Irish!

IP address for ShopLocalLimerick.ie : 78.109.161.5

IP lookup results reveal that the site is hosted by a company called UKFast.net, which, as the name suggests, is UK based.

Did no one mention this local company to them, of if that was out of their price range, why not this Irish company?

Are there no Irish franchises one could buy?
  • zasie
Yes there are plenty depending on what type of business one would like to work in. I don't think you would decide to buy a franchise purely because it is Irish. There are lots of factors to be considered. It is afterall a big business decision.

ShopLocal Limerick is a franchise purchased from a UK company - the Ryedale group - hence the Uk web host. The Magazine and website were sold as a package so the director of the company did not have any input to it. It is a means for local business to promote to local customers in the immediate and surrounding areas and to a broader audience via the website. Perhaps one might note on a more positive note that local charities such as Barnardos and special olympics were promoted in some of the editions free of charge! I think that deserves credit for promoting local.

lads this a non story , the majority of 'Irish' webhosts servers are abroad.
  • @Kieran
That may have been true a few years ago, but most of the serious Irish hosting providers these days have servers in Ireland

Seems a bit hypocritical to me

Hold the moral outrage there squid. Unless they are moralising about shopping local then there is nothing to this. SLL sounds like a for profit enterprise. This is plainly not a case of 'do as I say not as I do'. They are just a pain 'ol business trying to make money for themselves - and in so doing also making money for their customers, providing info for their readers, business for printers etc etc. That's the way the world works so cut them some slack.

Look, they do pontificate to us to support local, their catch phrase is "love local, SUPPORT LOCAL shop local.

I am just sick of people over the last several months telling me where I should spend my money when they don't spend it there themselves.

Fianna Fail hire an american company Blue State to develop their web site when there are hundreds if not thousands of Irish companies who could do it. all the while they are telling us to "do our patriotic duty" and spend here.

Fine gael hired a Russian freelancer to develop their site

Labour have their posters printed in Northern Ireland

My message to this lot are to stop shoving shite in my letterbox telling me to shop local unless you are prepared to do it yourself.

    True,

But a fair number of Irish Companies (I do not include Blacknight in this) are merely resellers for overseas hosting operations.
