The job of an artist. There a truth that exists in all of us, that belongs only to us, and if that truth resides so strong that it cannot lay quiet, one must tell it. Their is courage in telling one's truth, one's life. There is nothing in Ireland, to allow you to speak your truth without people having their opinion about what you have seen or felt. The authentic self, the one that truly feels, good or bad, is more important than what a society deems worthy as truth. The society I speak of, is the one that is dictated by those who refuse to educate themselves. Would people have rather him put his story in the form of an autobiography, as I am sure the anger directed at the fiction would not nearly be as hurtful as the real truth.

"To announce truths is an infallible receipt for being persecuted."

    Voltaire

What do you chose, to tell what you know is the truth, or do you tell what you are told tell. Do you keep what you know a secret, all the bad things, that society says keep quiet, we dont want others to know what its really like. These are no discussions between generations here in Ireland, and hence the backlash, and lack of understanding people seem to have about this book, and any author or artist who choses to bring to the public view what the church and state will never do. The attack this man made on Frank Mccourt is more telling about the state of this society, and its lack of understanding of who the real truth tellers are. I am not just speaking of artists either, any individual can stand up and say what the believe, or know, that is a freedom that most do not excercise. Consider his book published at the time he speaks of early 20th century Ireland, would have never happened. How far back does all go, probably to much for people to bare, so generation to generation carries a torch of shame, until one finally stands up and says I will not go on in this way, I break the chain. Which leads to a discussion of how long is it gonna be till people start standing behind those who have carried all the lies, all the sorrows, all the woes, that were not their own, and who stand up in tears to speak their peace. Those who so vehemently abolish, and judge are those abhor change, and continue this long chain of shame. The Choice is yours, who will you stand by. Dig deep, the history is quite strong, and all the answers are there, just takes the actions of only few and this has always been true. Irish Leaders have never been allowed a peaceful non -violent path of resistance, and this is why the legacy continues, and the corruption continues to deepen, to the core of the individual. Keep these men in arguing, and nothing will ever get done.
Ireland's time is coming, something new, something that brings all the history to one point, of understanding.

For somebody who seems to love the truth so much you also seem to have an issue with telling people who you are. What a joke. Stand by what you say unless you are ashamed of it.

The Truth needs no name!!. If you had my name, would you then personally attack me. This is a time for truth, and the truth does not need an ego, nor does it need an identity. This century has already shown you the repurcussions of what happens when you create a cult of personality and its just the beginning of the century. We attack what we know is true, thats okay, it means we are all still alive inside, hence the art. Hopefully if we get angry enough we might actually do something about all of it. Honest though, if someone does step forward and gives a name, you can guarntee the will tear them down to the bone, research or google like hell to find out who does this person think they are for saying what they feel, and saying what they know is all wrong. A real leader does not need to be validated by where they come from, where they were brought up or what their life has been up that point. A man only sees what is wrong and wants to say or do something about it, their action can create hope that has been lost, and all are looking for hope. I promise to reveal who I am if you promise to do something. I

I had the displeasure of meeting this Guy (Hannan) in the 80s and I see he has not evolved any since then!

    What a bunch of whingers.

Angela's Ashes was a subjective memoir, its' seen from HIS eyes ...like it or loath it...

There is no denying it's simply one of the greatest Irish books ever written, a wonderful piece of majestic writing.

We all should be proud of it.

m-h. We're not all on Hannans side!

.....otherwise you're absolutely right, a gem of a novel that will outlive us all, as a Limerickman I'm certainly proud of Frank McCourt, Jim Kemmy, Michael Curtin, Denis O'Shaughnessy and others who have taken on the task of recording our citys more recent history in factual or fictional lore.

I thank them for the way they have shone a light through some dark days in the reign of the clergy and their forelock tugging legislature. Days which are hopefully in our past and gone from us, but are not forgotten within their pages.

I have serious reservations about the authenticity of this so called attack. Interesting to watch this because it accurately reflects the venom some people had towards this book when it was first published. My understanding is that Hannan was a radio broadcaster in Limerick at the time and his radio show was listened to primarily by elderly people, namely, McCourts generation in Limerick. It seems Hannan was a self-appointed McCourt critic and also published a book or two in response to McCourts publications. I remember reading Angelas Ashes and, as it happens, I actually liked the book but I do recall thinking, when I first saw this on the Late Late Show that maybe there was as much untruth in this Live appearance as their was in the 'memoir'. The fact is McCourt did not answer any of these questions but just waved and kicked and out-shouted Hannan but never actually answers other than to admit to using false names, vague memories and writers license. It seems to me that it was all a storm-in-a-teacup and both writers seem to gain booksales wise from all the publicity. I think the whole thing may have been a publicity prank. Just think about it. You cannot do this sort of thing on live TV and get away with it without some sort of prior consent. At one point in the footage the camera pans back to Hannan at a serious moment and he is smiling contentedly as if he had 'delivered' as promised. McCourt later said that he was 'ambushed' by Hannan and Kenny and this seems to imply that the event was pre-arranged. A lot of people seem to have fallen for the stunt and when you read the comments on this page, interestingly all negative against Hannan, they are from 'young' people who know no different. I wonder how older people feel about it.

what do you meen bock by your comment bock i dont get it?
At least he was able to write in English.

Bock the robber I nearly pissed myself when I read your comment!
I read the book way back when while on holiday and I laughed a lot and could feel tears well up a few times also. It is a memoir not the concise history of Limerick. He should have changed the names of people in the book who he must have known would have been offended. It would not have affected the books impact whatsoever. I remeber a lot of Limerick people at the time despised the book without even reading it, a bit like Salman Rushdies, Satanic Verses...and then enter limericks Ayatollah, Hannon....catch cry of the common ear...cupid stunt.

Gerry Hannon should be ashamed of himself. Well he had no luck in the ending up in court for illegal broadcasting, What an opportunist
