Bonfire Night

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Bonfire night.

Originally called ‘Walpurgis Nigh’ is was a traditional religious holiday of pre-Christian society celebrated on the 30 of April -1 of May in large parts of Europe.

Historically Walpurgisnacht is derived from various pagan spring customs. Bonfires were built to keep away the dead and chaotic spirits that were then widely believed to walk among the living.

This is followed by the return of light and the sun as celebrated during May Day.

However, in recent years it has become a way of disposing of unwanted household items and furnishings and setting them on fire.

And not only is it a hazard to the environment, it has also become an excuse for anti-social behaviour and one of the busiest days of the year for the Emergency services.

Gardaí are pleading with bonfire attendees to take care and especially to watch young children around these dangerous liaisons.

Tis The Season

No not to be jolly but for gorse fires, at present 9 Limerick units are around the county trying to get them under control and put them out.

It is time that people realised that these fires cause so much harm, if the wind changes they can spread uncontrollably and risk peoples homes. The wildlife is disrupted. At this time of year birds have hatched young and are just getting them out of nests, wildlife which live in these areas are homeless and move closer to to populated areas where they have to scavenge for food, or in the case of the rats they take over loft areas of houses .

It’s time the people who set these fires are held accountable, not just for the damage they do to the natural fauna and wildlife but for the drain of resources, while our brave firefighters are out there putting these wild fires out they can’t be available if a house in their area goes up in flames with people trapped inside .
