Re: Floods
Yeah, I'm in Corbally and we had to army trucks dumping off sandbags last night. I'm about 60 metres away from the river and it's still rising, slowly but surely. What's worse is that all the drains are backed up, so the streets are flooding now too. Ah well, there's nothing I can do about it and I have me wellies on standby!

Re: Floods
Was talking to an Engineer about a year ago about the maintenance of the shannon embankents all along the river. He reckoned it was badly in need of work in places and in particular around the Mungret area. Work has been done on some places but not all. Maybe it wasn't considereed urgent then.

Tried Limericks Nointy-foive fm thinking they'd have something more up to date. Apparently someone or some country called Jordan is leaving a UK reality/chat show and two more talentless fucks from Dublin are about to become celebrities! .......And that's your local news....for now.
That Station is as useful as a fart in a spacesuit when it comes to local news.

Re: Floods
I was around the Island bank there a while ago and the river is flowing at a fair speed, mind you its not at a dangerous height yet but I think the Sandmall could be in trouble as that place is prone to the high tides.

Re: Floods
WTF
So, after hearing about the impending floods in Shannon Banks & Westbury my sister, neighbour and I headed over to the GAA pitch to get some sandbags at around 5.30 yesterday.
Anyway, we were standing around with our allocated 4 sandbags each, waiting our turn to borrow a shovel and fill them when Cllr Cathal Crowe turned up. He gave everyone an update on what was happening, and pointed out that Shannon Banks was already starting to flood and that Westbury was in no immediate danger, therefore, please give the sandbags to those in dire need. At that point a man in his 50’s turned up, and he looked absolutely distraught. Cllr Crowe informed us that this guys back garden was already flooded and so to give him some sandbags. We gave him ours. 2 mins later we spotted the same guy, desperately trying to hold a sandbag with one hand and fill it with the other – and about ten people standing around staring at him!!! Bloody Hell!!! My sister ran over and grabbed the bag and we helped him fill them. The poor guy, It was also very obvious that he had a bad back. We then helped him load the car up and the entire time , there were lots of people standing around watching and doing FUCK ALL to help this guy! WTF?????
Granted there were many people there, whose houses were in severe danger, but there were plenty of others whose houses weren’t and they didn’t give a shit. It was like every man for himself. I then found out this morning that people were stealing sandbags from other people’s front doors last night. Seriously people what has happened to our sense of community? My neighbours are fabulous and everyone looks out for everyone else but I’m so pissed off with what I witnessed down at the GAA pitch last night.
EXPLETIVE, EXPLETIVE, EXPLETIVE.
Rant over.
PS. Cllr Crowe is keeping everyone updated by text and doing a great job. Well done. I feel a remote sense of guilt for hunting him off my doorstep when he was canvassing a few months ago ![]()
Also for those of us in Westbury, there is no immediate risk.

Re: Floods

Limerick floods: Over 20 families evacuated from their homes.
THERE were chaotic scenes in Shannon Banks last night as over 20 families evacuated their homes as the Shannon burst its banks.
"The main problem is that some people are reluctant to leave their homes,"explained Inspector Seamus Gallagher, Henry Street, Garda station, as he and members of the force helped families.
Ambulances, mini-buses, jeeps and army trucks were restricted from entry to the worst affected area, Hampstead at the rear of the estate, by the fact that a crowd of "onlookers" who had come up to view proceedings had parked their cars, obstructing emergency services from getting to the scene.
Everybody was wearing wellies and there were sandbags in front of the doors of all the homes in the area. Numerous children were carried from their homes and brought away to Jury's Inn hotel for the night.

Re: Floods
Mid-West braced for further flooding
Flood response efforts are continuing across the Mid-West, with local authority staff, fire and rescue crews, the ESB, the army and the Gardaí providing 24-hour response to the flooding crisis on the ground.
Clare County Council and Limerick County Council have confirmed that a flood warning remains in place along the lower River Shannon owing to increasing levels of water in the Shannon system.
The areas concerned are O'Briensbridge / Montpelier, Clonlara, Castleconnell, Westbury and Shannon Banks.
Clare County Council has closed the main bridge in Sixmilebridge. The local authority said it was concerned over the safety of the bridge structure.
Diversions for motorists using the R471 are currently being arranged by the Gardaí and Clare County Council.
The emergency services are continuing to monitor the situation across the Mid-West, in conjunction with the ESB at Ardnacrusha. Sandbags are available for collection from Parteen GAA Club and Clonlara Golf Club.
There has been further heavy rainfall overnight and this morning with more heavy rain forecast for the next few hours.
The ESB has confirmed however that it will not be changing the water release at Parteen Weir this morning. A further update will be issued at 2pm. There are media reports that more water will be released this afternoon.
Twenty-two families were evacuated last night from homes in the Hampstead Park, Shannon Banks, and three families were evacuated from Springfield Drive in Castleconnell. No further evacuations have taken place overnight or this morning.
Clare County Council and Limerick County Council engineers continue to monitor flood levels throughout both counties.
Limerick County Council has closed the R525 Castleconnell to Montpelier-O'Briensbridge Road, near the railway bridge. Motorists are advised to divert via the R466 Montpelier to Birdhill road. The
following roads are also closed to traffic due to flooding:
The Belmont Road in Castleconnell;
The road beside the Public Carpark in Castleconnell;
Mountshannon road in Annacotty;
The road from Charcos to Scanlan Park in Castleconnell.
People are advised to use local diversions in these instances.
The Gort Road in Ennis remains closed at the industrial estate until further notice after Girroga Lake burst its banks. Efforts by the emergency services to alleviate flooding in this area are continuing.
Clare County Council has also advised that there has been no deterioration in the quality of the Ennis public water supply and the quality of water is being tested on an ongoing basis.
Members of the public are reminded to avoid contact with flood waters and to check on any elderly or infirm neighbours. Parents are asked to be particularly vigilant with children.

Re: Floods
This might be of interest to anyone who thinks they might be at risk....
www.floodmaps.ie
I think it shows flood levels in 1990 and 1950.
Select County as Limerick for Corbally.
I hope this helps.
